Trump speaks publicly during Carrier plant visit
“These companies aren’t going to be leaving”. Instead in this deal, it appears they are going to back off the tariff stuff, and instead give the company tax cuts.
In February, Carrier announced a decision to move their IN facility outside the United States and into Mexico. He toured the factory with his running mate Mike Pence _ who, as the outgoing governor of IN, was well-situated to aid negotiations _ and shook hands with several workers whose jobs would be preserved. “It’s not going to happen”, Trump warned.
On the campaign trail, Trump turned the Carrier layoffs into a symbol of working-class frustration, promising that he would rebuild a manufacturing base that has been eroded over the past three decades. But I don’t understand why anyone else would consider this a good deal – except, of course, the leadership team at United Technologies, which must have sore knuckles from all the fist-bumping. “Is it really all that valuable in terms of that making that decision?”
“Whoever the hell your son is, these people owe him a lot”, Trump said.
At one point, Nelson pleaded with the crowd to quiet down so he can continue with the statement, saying, “I’ve got information that’s important to share as part of the transition”. “I commend that. I just wish I was included”, Breedlove said. “Now will other companies take advantage?”
Trump, who has said “the only thing that matters to me is running our country,” has planned a December 15 press conference to outline his plans.
From the scant details about the actual deal between Trump and Carrier, it’s clear the state of IN will be offering the company at least $7 million IN benefits.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, United Technologies will receive $7 million in tax breaks over 10 years for agreeing to keep the 1,000 Carrier jobs in Indiana.
The company will invest $16 million and get $7 million in state incentives in return. The compromise can come off as merely symbolic, though, when a closer inspection reveals that about 300 of the jobs Trump “saved” weren’t actually slated to go to Mexico, according to the Journal, and that Carrier still plans to ship about 1,300 jobs to our southern neighbor anyway – closing an entire second IN plant IN the process. Details remain hazy, including whether some Carrier employees will still lose jobs and the nature of the tax breaks the company is getting to stay in Indiana.
At the Cincinnati event, Trump and Pence will talk about what is ahead and the “positive change” Trump will bring to the country, spokesman Miller said.
Casting aside job interviews for senior cabinet positions yet to be filled, the president-elect will visit an air conditioning plant in IN which he repeatedly leaned on in public not to ship a planned 2,000 jobs to Mexico. “The dynamics are considerably different than they were even before the election”.
“The fact that he is strong-arming a company to potentially stay and do work here is not pro-business”, said Alex Major, a partner at McCarter & English who counsels companies on regulatory issues.
It also talked about promises from Trump to “create an improved, more competitive US business climate”.
Trump was due to hold a rally in Cincinnati later on Thursday and address supporters who helped him win the swing state of OH in his upset victory over Clinton.
“This is what tax reform is all about.making the tax code far better for American businesses to stay in America”, said Ryan, adding that the US government taxes its corporations at a higher rate than most foreign competitors do.
That was the message from former Democratic presidential contender Sen. How’s that for standing up to corporate greed?
“United Technologies took Trump hostage and won. And that should send a shockwave of fear through all workers across the country”.
