Trump salutes Carrier _ and himself _ for saving jobs

John Mutz, a board member of Indiana Economic Development Corporation, which will vote on the incentives package on December 13, told I-Team 8 that Carrier would receive what’s called an EDGE grant, which he said would include tax incentives of up to $5 million spread over 10 years.
“This is good news, but the incoming president has a high bar to meet when it comes to putting in place the kind of economic policies that are going to benefit American workers”, Earnest said.
President-elect Donald Trump spoke tellingly Thursday about his plans to incentivize businesses to stay within US borders. The company could lose billions of dollars if the Trump administration took a hostile position towards it.
But critics of Trump’s plan immediately expressed concern that the Carrier deal only shows big businesses that they can get financial incentives out of Trump if they threaten to leave the U.S.
Carrier has promised to invest $16 million into this factory. “But if he says here are some tools, we can figure out how to use them”, said Kyle Hannon, president of the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce.
He says it wasn’t until a week ago that he took his promise seriously, after watching a report about the IN company on the nightly news.
Trump did pledge during the campaign to create to penalties for companies, like Carrier, take jobs elsewhere. I won’t say which one.
“And I never thought I made that promise”. Carrier said the deal is contingent on employment, job retention and capital investment.
Trump said “companies are not going to leave the United States anymore without consequences”.
Greg Hayes, CEO of United Technologies, said they were convinced to stay in IN after discussions with Trump and Pence about their plans “to improve the competitiveness of the USA business environment through tax reform and through a more thoughtful approach to regulation”. Sanders wins Indiana’s Democratic presidential primary the following week.
After Indianapolis, Trump heads to Cincinnati, where he will kick off his thank-you tour at 7 p.m. ET.
Mutz said it likely makes up about 10 percent of UTC’s earnings.
After visiting Trump Tower in NY on Wednesday, Republican Sen.
Pence, the current governor of IN and vice president-elect, told the crowd it was great to be back IN IN and today was a victory for working people IN America. Trump also said he wants to peel back the amount of regulations placed on the “great leaders of industry and even small business people, who are being crushed”.
The Indiana and OH stops are Trump’s first public events since he won the presidency.

At a news conference, the mayor of Santa Catarina, the Monterrey suburb where the Carrier plant is, said he had not heard from the company.
