Is Carrier Still Moving Jobs To Mexico? In Short: Yes
Analysts said the company stood to lose out on millions in savings by leaving some production in IN, even with the tax savings on offer.
President-elect Trump made his first public speech today since the election on a trip to IN to tout a deal that he said made good on a campaign promise.
John Mutz, a board member of Indiana Economic Development Corporation, which will vote on the incentives package on December 13, told I-Team 8 that Carrier would receive what’s called an EDGE grant, which he said would include tax incentives of up to $5 million spread over 10 years.
President-elect Donald Trump was back in the Midwest holding campaign-style events Thursday. We hope that moving forward, all workers will have a seat at the table and that a Trump-Pence Administration will follow the lead of common-sense Hoosiers like Joe Donnelly and Andre Carson, who have been working to hold Carrier accountable since the moment their announcement was made to ship jobs to Mexico. Blackford says he believes Trump is letting corporations know they can’t leave America. “Because say what you want, Indiana”.
David Cohen, a political science professor at the University of Akron who specializes in While House staffing, said he finds it “baffling” Trump would spend so much time campaigning. Until he saw the man on television.
“Replicated? Certainly”, she said when I asked if she expected a similar deal to be struck for any OH manufacturer threatening to relocate jobs.
“Well, your son is great, and he meant that, didn’t he?”
“The tax incentives aren’t really meaningful”, he said in an email statement.
Trump has shown a willingness to change some of his firmest positions and that he can be easily persuaded – he tends to echo the last thing a person told him or something he saw on television. President elect trump just wrapped up his talk at the carrier plant.
Democrats, meanwhile, championed Obama’s stimulus package – as well as the bank bailout’s inclusion of money to rescue the automotive industry – early in his presidency.
“I actually said I didn’t make it”.
Sen. Ron Wyden of OR, the top Democrat on the Finance Committee, said he would be asking more about the Carrier deal and said he would inquire whether there were promises about defense contracts. It was, he explained: “A euphemism”.
He warned, “If other companies start calling Wilbur Ross and saying, ‘He did it for Carrier, can’t he do it for us?’ then it will introduce real inefficiency into the economic system and into the decisions of investors”. “It’s not going to happen”.
“Let’s be clear: It is not good enough to save some of these jobs”, Sanders said.
The chairman of the Ball State College Republicans, said he feels like manufacturing jobs will never be back in full force like they were decades ago, but he thinks it’s important to have them. He said, look, your parent company United Technologies and it has a lot of government contracts. But no question, Tom, saving hundreds of jobs is a real victory for Mr. Trump even before he takes office. He said we love Mexico, but we have to get our fair shake. The Carrier deal may have been easier than most because of a combination of United Technologies’ reliance on federal contracts and the fact that Trump’s vice president, Mike Pence, is now the governor of Indiana. Trump said Thursday that amount would likely be higher. Those incentives are contingent upon several factors including employment, job retention and capital investment.
Seth Martin, a spokesman for Carrier, said IN offered the air conditioning and furnace manufacturer $7 million IN tax incentives after negotiations with Trump’s team to keep some jobs IN the state.
Still, Trump’s willingness to provide tax breaks and other incentives for employers is an encouraging sign, civic leaders said.
