Lamia director Gustavo Vargas told Bolivian television that the plane may have skipped a planned refuelling stop in northern Bolivia because the airport was closed, but that the pilot had had the option to refuel in the Colombian capital Bogota en route to Medellin.
Reports say at least 100,000 Atletico Nacional fans showed up to their stadium to pay tribute to the victims of the plane crash.
Only six of 77 people aboard survived.
“This tragedy has shaken the world of football, and we would like to send our support to all of those affected by it”.
The pilot is heard asking for “vectors” to the runway – the term for the navigation service provided to planes by air traffic control.
An air traffic controller told the pilot to maintain a circular holding pattern while another plane with mechanical problems was given priority to land.
Juan Sebastian Upegui was in the cockpit of a nearby Avianca aircraft carrying when he heard the doomed pilot scream: “We’re going down. we have a problem with fuel”.
The slower speed – along with the fact that the plane did not explode on impact – might explain how six people were able to survive, authorities said.
“I was supposed to go on the trip but ended up staying”, he said.
And it has now been claimed that the LaMia charter plane from Bolivia had been flying for up to around 8 minutes longer than its stated fuel capacity before it was ordered to circle. “They aren’t as big as Nacional but they were coming to give it their all, so tonight we’re Chapecoense fans”, said Lidia Alzate, 41, who came dressed in white along with her two children.
Investigators have yet to announce any single cause for the crash and a full analysis is expected to take months. You have the junior team; the team that you have on medical recovery. I know it from experience – I’ve lost a brother myself and I know how painful it is. “And now he’s like this, in a coffin”.
Its run to the finals of the Copa Sudamericana impressed fans across the continent as it knocked out some of South America’s legendary teams.
Supporters of Chapecoense gathered at the club’s stadium on Wednesday to honour the players killed in Monday’s plane crash. “So Caio [the coach] said he would not take me”. In Europe, a minute’s silence for Chapecoense will be held before every Champions League and Europa League game next week, UEFA said.
Mr Suarez and Mr Tumiri were shaken and bruised but not in critical condition, medical staff said.
Journalist Rafael Henzel and player Helio Neto were listed as stable.
Two crew members were likely to leave the hospital Thursday, an official said. One player, Jakson Follmann, had his right-leg amputated, while defender Alan Rushel was recovering from delicate surgery for a spinal fracture.
