Stephen Johnson: UK upsets Cardinals behind Johnson’s three TD
Coming off a humiliating loss in front of a national audience, the 11th-ranked Cardinals attempt to end their regular season on a high note Saturday when they host Kentucky in the 29th edition of the Governor’s Cup.
The Louisville football team was upset by the Kentucky Wildcats for the first time in six years on Saturday. This was a game that Louisville didn’t have any business losing and they were sure to underwhelm again.
Although he posted some eye-popping statistics, there could be some questions about his inability to lead Louisville into the College Football Playoff, given the late-season losses. Kentucky is playing for a stranglehold on bowl eligibility, while Louisville doesn’t have much to play for, other than wrapping up Jackson’s Heisman Trophy. Jackson was, and still is a dynamic dual-threat, but his Heisman chances have taken a hit.
“This loss is going to be hard”, he said.
Offensive guard Nick Haynes was Kentucky’s highest-rated player with an 82.5.
RUSHERS vs. RESISTENCE: Kentucky enters with its first pair of 1,000-yard rushers in junior Boom Williams (1,072) and Benny Snell, whose 1,006 yards and team-best 12 TDs are both freshman school records. He said he expects to feel emotional seeing players he brought there and coached but noted, “I’m here now, I’m enjoying it and I can’t wait ’til Saturday”.
Through five games, the Cardinals have given up just 55.8 points per game, are holding opponents to just 32 percent shooting overall and are ranked number one in KenPom’s defensive efficiency rankings.
Lamar Jackson pulled the football tight against his chest and thrust out his right arm to simulate a pose one Ed Smith once struck as the sculptor’s model for the Heisman Trophy. Kaaya also became the first Hurricane to throw for at least 3,000 yards in three different seasons. “Then we have a big recruiting weekend this weekend as well”, Stoops said. “I can’t give enough love to my snapper and holder”.
While Jackson may still win the Heisman, this season will likely be remember with a what could have been attitude. Jackson accounted for 316 yards and three touchdowns in last year’s 38-24 comeback win in Lexington, doing most of his damage in the second half.
“We had 55 minutes to teach it because we didn’t put it in at all”, Pitino said following his team’s 62-52 victory over the Shockers. He’s a great player.
After the game, Cardinals head coach Bobby Petrino said Jackson made the wrong read on the play.
Yeah, it remains Jackson’s Heisman to lose, but he was unable to put away the competition the past two games, when voters were watching with heightened interest.
Garrett Johnson hauled in five catches for 164 yards and two scores, which included a 75-yard touchdown grab on Kentucky’s first play of the game.
“True to their name, Kentucky employed the wildcat effectively against Louisville”. I don’t know how many plays we had in the third quarter, but I know it wasn’t very many. “I’m so happy for this team”.
He completed 16-of-25 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 25 times for 171 yards while being sacked three times, bringing his total to 14 in the last two outings. He also broke the ACC single-season record for TDs accounted for previously held by Clemson’s Deshaun Watson.
