Local business owner: Trump deal with Carrier keeping campaign promise
Trump touched on nationalistic themes, vowing that from now on “it’s going to be America first”.
But Tyler Cowen, professor of economics at George Mason University who identifies as a libertarian, worries that under a Trump administration, a kind of “crony capitalism” – where companies that are good to a presidency are rewarded – will prevail. It’s not going to happen.
There are now several hundred miles of border barrier separating the United States and Mexico. “These are stupid refugee programs created by stupid politicians”, he charged. During the campaign, Trump said he would have his attorney general appoint a special prosecutor to review the Clinton inquiries. “Didn’t we have fun fighting Hillary?”
She spoke in response to “lock her up” chants that greeted Trump during a rally Thursday. “Because, I said, we just can’t let it happen”.
President-Elect: So many people in these other – that big, big, handsome plant behind us, which will be even more lovely in about seven months from now, they’re so happy.
Carrier workers in the room got excited when Trump said companies are not leaving the USA anymore without consequences.
Vice President-Elect Mike Pence, who accompanied Trump, announced that “Carrier has chose to stay in IN, invest more than $16 million in this facility alone, and will keep more than 1,000 jobs right here in the heart of the Heartland”. During a news conference Thursday at the Carrier Corp. facility in Indianapolis, Pence said the decision by parent company Connecticut-based United Technologies Corp.
Trump reiterated his support for stronger borders, especially to the south with Mexico, and said people would be able to come and go “legally”.
Any changes to the tax code would need to be approved by Congress.
Carrier’s parent company will receive $7 million worth of tax breaks over a decade as part of the deal to keep jobs in the US, while Carrier will also reportedly invest $16 million to keep operations in the state. The Indiana Business Journal reported United Technologies was also afraid of losing defense contracts. That decision was made final just last month.
Mr Trump, who takes office on January 20, did not say what the consequences would be, but he frequently threatened during the election campaign that his administration would put a 35 per cent import tariff on goods made by American manufacturers that moved jobs offshore.
“Probably none of them amount to anything in terms of safety or the things you’d have regulations for”, he said.
Afterward, Trump announced on Twitter that he would “be going to IN on Thursday to make a major announcement concerning Carrier A.C. staying IN Indianapolis”. He added, “You’re going to sell so many air conditioners”.
Trump himself implied that such tactics will be part of his strategy to convince USA companies to remain in America.
Sarah Palin wants to say thanks but no thanks to Donald Trump’s Carrier factory deal, and blasted the President-elect for “crony capitalism”. “I don’t think an American steelmaker has built a mill since the 1990s without major state help”.
Trump spoke after Pence and talked about the election, companies leaving the country and the deal with Carrier.
