Syrians displaced in rebel-held parts of Aleppo, says UN
Once home to 1 million people, Syrian government forces – backed by Russian Federation – are obliterating neighborhoods held by rebels. The government assault aims to take Aleppo by the time U.S. President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
As the rebel territory shrinks under the advance of the Syrian military, desperate civilians make one last run for safety.
He said the United Nations was coming up with a plan and approval from Syrian authorities remained essential.
The Syrian army, backed by Shi’a militiamen from Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon, has taken back control of several neighbourhoods of eastern Aleppo, inflicting the most serious defeat on the opposition forces for several years. Local sources tell CCTV that numerous residents of eastern Aleppo are hesitant to leave, because they’re afraid of being detained by authorities in light of reports that hundreds of young men were being held in a screening center until their identities are confirmed.
They are among hundreds of refugees sheltered in three concrete blocks that make up a reception centre in the government-held town of JIbreen about 10km (six miles) north of the city.
Cavusoglu said the failure to find a political solution in Syria will breed more extremists.
Now, human rights groups are calling on member states to bring the matter before the full 193-member General Assembly, whose resolution are non-binding but sends a strong message from the global community.
Syrian state media is reporting Friday from areas newly captured during a government ground offensive in the besieged eastern Aleppo enclave, showing restorations of roads, removal of debris from the battered areas and resettlement of civilians.
Fierce fighting continued in the district, the Observatory said.
Government forces have overrun the northern area and, while southern areas are still under rebel control, civilians there are cut off and caught in the crossfire.
Syrian government forces have recaptured half the former rebel stronghold of east Aleppo, an activist group said Friday, as the US and Russian Federation studied new ways to break the diplomatic deadlock over how to stop the fighting in the city. Tens of thousands of civilians have streamed out of the city’s east, and Russian Federation has renewed calls for humanitarian corridors so aid can enter and desperate residents can leave.
Retaliatory rocket fire by the rebels on government-held western areas of the city has killed 55 civilians, the monitor says.
“He would act out skits for the children to break the walls between them”, said a colleague in one moving tribute.
“They want to sit down in Aleppo with our people there to discuss how we can use the four corridors to evacuate people out”, said Egeland, speaking at a press conference in Geneva on Thursday.
