Ind all out 204, set Eng 405 to win
Earlier, Root had some lucky escape with Virat Kohli dropping the English No 3 on nine at leg slip and a decision was also overturned.
England now need 318 runs to win the match to take the lead in the five-match Test series while India need eight wickets to clinch the encounter.
A sorry collapse in which they lost their 10 wickets for 83 runs after a 75-run opening stand – a defiant display put up by Alastair Cook and Haseeb Hameed as they blunted the Indian attack, sowing seeds of a spirited fight in their chase of a mammoth target.
Kohli told the press after the win: “We thought they are going to come out with more intent, to be very honest”.
“We have played some really good cricket”.
“You can see by the scoring rates”.
Kohli hinted that England had played into their hosts’ hands.
“It is a pretty basic thing to do”.
“When you play in India, you expect ball to keep low”.
“It’s not some people’s natural way of playing”.
“It’s a bit hard to take wickets if you play defensive”.
“I think we all saw the first day was the easiest to bat – the first two sessions in particular”.
Broad then made short work of Ashwin, caught behind via a faint outside-edge on an attempted push-drive, and Rashid soon got Wriddhiman Saha too – lbw to a googly.
“The biggest positives are how the fast bowlers bowled and Jayant’s debut”.
For India, Kohli scored a sparkling 167 in the first innings followed by a gritty 81 in the second knock. Yadav may not always get a game as India would prefer to go with only one frontline off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin.
“I think we can all agree it was a good toss to win”.
“(It was) annoying to lose that wicket in the last over but we’ve got a lot of batting in the team and hopefully someone gets stuck in tomorrow”.
India scored 455 in their first innings and England replied with 255.
Cook was more measured in his assessment of the Indian bowlers, saying “they are not Supermen by any stretch of the imagination”. There were a couple of of close calls and we thought of getting the breakthroughs.
“We are still very much in this series”.
Fast bowler Stuart Broad shrugged off a right foot injury to lead England’s fightback in the second Test on Sunday as they dismissed India for 204 in their second innings in Visakhapatnam.
Looking effortless all around the park, Kohli went for an expansive powerful drive throwing his bat wide of his body as the ball looped high in the air and looked as if it went past the giant frame of Stokes at the slip.
