Japanese theme park apologizes for freezing 5000 fish in ice rink
The ice will be melted, and this operation could take a whole week or more.
The decision to delete posts about the ice rink also upset some people, a few of whom posted the offending photos back onto Space World’s page.
After the polemic, the representatives from the Space World amusement park pronounced on the matter.
The amusement park has been alleged to have taken the step in an attempt to attract crowds. “I know Japanese dont [sic] value animal life that much”, one commenter wrote, “but making people skate over corpses is a new level of human dross”.
It was supposed to be an educational attraction but ended up attracting accusations for abusing living creatures and sending kids the wrong message about food wastage.
Space World in the city of Kitakyushu, south-west Japan, bowed to pressure to close the facility on Sunday after an online campaign denouncing the piscine graveyard as “cruel”, “immoral” and “weird”.
A space-themed park in Japan has apologised after freezing thousands of fish, and crabs into an ice skating rink as part of a winter attraction.
“Therefore we will cancel the event of the Ice Museum from today”, the statement said.
Shibata said the fish were all already dead at the time of purchase and were considered unfit to be sold in markets. Many of these fish don’t meet standards for selling to customers. The park plans on having an appropriate “memorial service” soon. They wanted the customers “to experience the feeling of skating on the sea”.
The attraction will be unfrozen so the fish can be removed, added Mr. Takeda.
Well that sounds super exciting. “I don’t feel comfortable allowing my kids to skate on them”.
Now, we don’t know if any hockey would ever be played here.
The museum acquired the Pacific saury, banded blue-sprat and other varieties at a local fish market for the seasonal event, which was expected to continue through spring.
