Rep files amendment to eliminate Electoral College
One is diversity of opinion and the second was to ensure the most qualified person was elected.
The first observation is kind of stating the obvious.
When the Founders established the electoral college, it was in an era of limited nationwide communication. They are way overweighted by comparison.
“If electors vote against their party, they usually pay a fine”. That makes a Californian equal to about 2/3rds of an Iowan. Trump went after old foes like Evan McMullin and John Kasich. And the Electoral College is often panned as a result. I am sure you have heard the saying, “only in America”, well only in America is the victor actually the loser.
In his email, R. Roger Bedfor insisted; “Elimination (of the Electoral College) would spell the death of the Republican Direct elections of president/vice president would radically alter us into a pure democracy which I believe the founding fathers feared nearly as much as hereditary kingdoms”.
Victor of the popular vote by a margin approaching 2 percent.
Ms Clinton has 65,250,000 votes compared to the President-elect’s 62,686,000 votes, the newspaper reports. The ratio of Clinton votes per EV (277,500 to 205,000) is around 1.35.
The poll results were nevertheless surprising given that surveys following past presidential elections showed a consistent majority wanting the United States to choose its president by direct popular vote. As some of the interviews suggest, even some of the stereotypically Republican voters had voted for Obama because he was viewed more as an “outsider” than Clinton.
The outcome of the presidential election has generated much discussion on whether we should abandon the Electoral College in favor of using the popular vote. Minnesota produces over 300,000 votes per elector while Alabama produces only 200,000. My figuring is kind of ballpark, but again, you get the drift. This is hardly a mandate. ” At that point, I was sure Trump’s nomination meant little in the face of his imminent and inevitable campaign missteps and misconduct, and “Adversity is the parent of virtue…when Donald Trump is president!” The tour is shaping up to be a multi-state gloatfest that will give Trump an opportunity to rub his victory in his opponent’s faces. The compact needs states with 105 more electoral votes to become effective. These voters were voting against Clinton rather than for Trump.
It is important to note that population is not discounted. Millions of would-be voters didn’t participate because of obstacles created to discourage them.
Sessions’s nomination to the federal bench was rejected in 1986 in part because of a voting rights case he handled while US attorney in Alabama. This unnecessary travesty also occurred during two 19th-century presidential elections. These include strict photo-ID requirements, cutbacks in early voting and new restrictions on registration. Sessions’s office alleged then that three black civil rights activists in Perry County, Ala., had tampered with absentee ballots. The framers intended that the electors’ judgements and decisions were to be totally free of any political control.
I am from a very blue state, Massachusetts, and a purple family that is more blue than red. Forty-one percent of respondents – including two-thirds of those who voted for Donald Trump – felt that the 2016 election was critical because it was our last chance to “stop America’s decline”.
It is true that the Electoral College is undemocratic but it gets that characteristic from including senators in the formula for allocating electors.
