England slip to third Test defeat
A week after he moved to fourth spot, India’s Test captain Virat Kohli has attained a career-high third place in the latest ICC Test rankings for batsmen.
The visitors were all out for 283 runs in their first innings while India had posted 417.
When probed by Sky Sports on Hameed’s replacement, England coach Trevor Bayliss hinted that the likes of Nick Gubbins and Keaton Jennings in the A side could get the nod. While India can consider Ashwin and Jadeja to be all-rounders, Jayant Yadav, playing only his second Test, raised his hand up to be the third all-rounder of the team.
With two tests to play, India has outplayed England so far on tour.
Team India is on course for back-to-back second win against England at the 3rd Test being played at Mohali. India go 2-0 up in the series.
Out! Rashid to Pujara, out caught by Root.
After the match, the official Twitter handle of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) tweeted a picture of Kohli in conversation with Hameed with the caption, “Inspiring generation next”.
Hameed made 82 on his debut in the first test and scored 219 runs in the series at an average of 43.8 to stake a strong claim to be Cook’s long-term opening partner. Cheteshwar Pujara is batting on 13, Pathiv Patel is on 16. Equally creditable was the all-round effort of the other two specialist spinners – Jadeja (90 run and 4 wickets) and Jayant (55 runs and 4 wickets).
He put on 41 runs for the tenth wicket with James Anderson (5), who was run out by a throw from the outfield. Starting the series in 15th position, Kohli has risen at a fast pace scoring 405 runs in the three Tests against England.
WICKETS! Haseeb Hameed has once again showed that he belongs the big stage but Mohammed Shami has scalped two wickets in an over to cut short England’s possible fightback. The pacer bowled a brilliant over where he dismissed Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid.
Root was looking on his way to another Test hundred before he was caught brilliantly at slips by Ajinkya Rahane off Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling.
At tea on day four, the hosts were 1-33. “I am glad I could get a fifty in the second innings and stay there till the end for the team”, he added.
Off-spinner Jayant Yadav piled on the misery for England by dismissing danger-man Jos Buttler (18).
Haseeb showing character was a positive but it has been a frustrating four days.
