Wall Street Journal Slams Trump’s Carrier Deal, Says it’s Bad for Workers
Unveiling a tax-break deal to stop 1100 jobs at an air conditioning plant in the state of in shifting to Mexico, the President-elect warned there would be “consequences” for other companies that move manufacturing plants overseas.
But now the question arises: Which Trump will appear at the rally?
She spoke in eastern Lithuania as North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nations were winding up a major military exercise, part of the alliance’s effort to reassure member countries close to Russia’s border.
The Republican said he persuaded Carrier executives to keep the jobs in IN by promising to reduce the us corporate income tax rate to 15 percent, from 35 percent, and make the federal government more business-friendly when he takes office on January 20.
The furnace manufacturer will receive $5 million in tax credits over 10 years in exchange for keeping 1,069 jobs at its Indianapolis plant with an average wage of $30.91 hour. Carrier actually had to return some retraining funds to the state when it announced plans to move to Mexico earlier this year, and this deal reinstates that money.
He brushed aside questions about the specifics of the deal, saying he thinks “it’s pretty darn good that people are keeping their jobs in IN instead of going to Mexico”. “But there were certain circumstances when that became the best option for us, and we went ahead and did it”.
We don’t know exactly what the company is getting. “I said Carrier will never leave”, he said.
Mr Trump however said thsi would not be the case: “These companies aren’t going to be leaving any more. It’s not going to happen”, Trump warned. “It’s simply not going to happen”.
Details of the deal Mr. Trump reached with Carrier haven’t been released, but the company’s parent corporation said it will mean some 1,100 jobs will remain in place.
At Carrier, Trump called his relationship with IN a “love affair”.
Carrier is receiving $7 million in tax incentives from the state of in – where Vice President-elect Mike Pence is governor – to keep the 1,100 jobs in America and to keep the factory open.
Chuck Jones, president of United Steelworkers Local 1999, said the union will meet to discuss the deal with Carrier Thursday, as well as Trump and Pence.
The company’s decision is something of a reversal, since earlier offers from the state had failed to sway Carrier. “There’s no reason for them to leave anymore”, Trump said. As a candidate, he threatened to raise tariffs on goods produced in Mexico to put “America first”.
Mr Trump reiterated his plan to slash the corporate tax rate from 35 per cent to “hopefully” 15 per cent and slash regulations without jeopardising safety or the environment.
July 12: Trump again attacks the Carrier decision during a campaign rally in suburban Indianapolis, three days before he announces Pence as his running mate.
IN is Vice President Mike Pence’s state. They’re going to have a great Christmas.
“I think it’s terrific”, he told reporters Wednesday, saying that he and Wilbur Ross, the billionaire nominated as commerce secretary, would work with Trump to “do the right thing for the American workers”.
While Trump received some cheers during his appearance, the response was not overwhelming, perhaps a reflection of that uncertainty.
The Carrier deal is just the latest piece of evidence suggesting that Trump’s populist rhetoric about championing the working stiff and cracking down on greedy globalist corporations was all a bunch of hooey.
But one Carrier employee, Robin Maynard, was ecstatic about the deal to save his job.
The other victory Trump will celebrate Thursday is far more clear-cut: his own on Election Day.
At the Cincinnati event, Trump and Pence will talk about what is ahead and the “positive change” Trump will bring to the country, spokesman Miller said.
The congressman named by Donald Trump to oversee the country’s health care system would also have an impact on another major issue – immigration.
