Jennings, Dawson added to England squad for India tests
There’s no stopping this juggernaut as it solidified its position as the No.1 Test nation by hammering England, the No. 2 team, to take an unassailable 2-0 series lead.
Cook is the highest run-scorer for England in Test history with 10934 runs in 138 matches and counting.
Neither he nor 26-year-old Dawson has previously figured in a Test squad, although the latter made both his one-day global and Twenty20 debuts last summer.
Cook himself has spent just 18 hours with his newborn daughter after dashing home from the Bangladesh tour for her birth.
‘I was very surprised, I didn’t expect this at all, ‘ said Dawson yesterday, echoing the opinions of many over his call-up.
“It will be good (for them) to get away and have a complete break, mentally and physically”, he said. “We will come back little bit more refreshed”.
After holding their own in the first Test in Rajkot, England have been outplayed in the last two matches and head to Mumbai 2-0 down with two games to play.
“I don’t know who was the last overseas player to score a hundred and take a five-for in a Test series over here – especially a pace bowler”, added Bayliss.
The Lancashire teenager scored two half-centuries in his first three Tests, but what impressed the pundits most was his temperament, technique and powers of concentration.
He said it was hard to compare this trip with the 2012 tour, as the two teams had changed character since.
He went on to add that he had seen no indication from Cook about stepping down from the job.
“Just enjoy it. You’ve got an opportunity to play for England in Test cricket – try to soak up the whole occasion and make the most of it”.
“I think he is coping all right”, Root said of Cook. “That’s probably the difference”.
Jennings hit two unbeaten double-hundreds among his near 1600 Specsavers County Championship runs for Durham this year.
Keaton Jennings: The son of former South Africa and IPL side Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) coach Ray Jennings, Keaton now has the chance of making Test debut right after playing a match for England Lions.
Jennings will replace opener Haseeb Hameed, while Dawson has come as Zafar Ansari’s backup.
But it is expected that both Vijay and Rahul will open the innings for India in the Mumbai Test with the 31-year-old keeper taking his place in the middle-order with Karun Nair, who made his debut in Mohali, likely to make way in the starting XI.
Stokes moved closer to a possible suspension during the third Test defeat in Mohali when he was charged with using “language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting” during an exchange with the India captain, Virat Kohli, after he was stumped for 29 during England’s first innings.
