Critic’s Say Trump’s “Thank You Tour” in Poor Taste
As The Washington Post reports, three of President-elect Donald J. Trump’s cabinet picks have personal net worths running to the billions of dollars. You’ll be seeing nearly all of them next week, ‘ Trump said in an interview that aired on Friday on Fox News. “We can’t go on with this gridlock.” .
In the run-up to his 20 January swearing in as president, Trump is expected to tour cities in swing states, like OH, that contributed to his shock election victory on 8 November.
The 50-year-old Ohioan, who said she’s never protested an election victor in her life, liked the “Hamilton” cast’s message to Mike Pence a few weeks back and it inspired her to make a sign bearing, “What the Hamilton cast said … ditto”.
He drew heavily from his campaign, promising to drain the swamp of influence and power in Washington, to destroy ISIS in the Middle East, and to build a wall to stop illegal immigration. The country understands that Trump has won the election, and there is little more to do than to wait for his inauguration.
And he stunned his own aides when he announced the Mattis pick from the stage.
The New York real estate magnate also announced that he would nominate Marine General James Mattis – calling him “Mad Dog Mattis” – to be his secretary of defence. “He’s the closest thing we have to Patton and it’s about time”.
He has interviewed several candidates for secretary of state, including the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, who attacked Trump throughout the 2016 campaigns but lately has spoken glowingly of the president-elect. We didn’t break it, we shattered that sucker. He jokingly warned the Cincinnati crowd to “not tell anyone”.
“I don’t want to tell you to this, I refuse to tell you, don’t let it outside of this room”, he said amid loud cheers.
Trump also vacillated between giving the credit for his victory to the voters and himself. “We have a great, great cabinet”.
“And we’re going to invite everyone from all political persuasions to join our movement to help us establish our goals for this country: great schools, safe neighborhoods, a thriving economy and a government that answers only to the people, our people”.
“We did have a lot of fun fighting Hillary didn’t we?”
His words unsurprisingly brought back the old “lock her up” chants. Trump’s biting criticism of past GOP foreign policy failures has apparently made it hard for him to fill senior positions in the defense and intelligence bureaucracy.
The vintage Trump performance Thursday night reflected an emerging theme of his transition. Barack Obama was obviously opposed to Trump. Yet there are also other moments, like his early morning Twitter tirades and his freewheeling performance on Thursday night when he behaves like the unorthodox force that turned American politics on its head.
Perhaps the most ironic and scary part of the whole “Thank You” rally was the crowd’s silence when Trump mentioned that everyone should come together. “I’m here tonight to say thank you, to say thank you for electing a president who will make America great again”, V.P. -elect Mike Pence said before introducing Trump. “Every single day, you will be the agents of change”, he said. Trump’s desire for a large infrastructure bill and his hostility to free trade are likely to be thorny sticking points within the GOP.
The last time Donald Trump was in OH, he urged thousands of his supporters gathered at the Wilmington air park to “dream big” as they headed toward Election Day. Trump broke from his script numerous times, glorifying his win.
Trump’s senior political adviser Stephen Miller beseeched the crowd to “stay engaged for the next eight years”.
Then, just like his campaign rallies, Trump launched a tirade against “the dishonest media”.
The American people proved that our democracy works much to the chagrin of whoever is on the losing side. “They separate us by race, by age, by income, by geography, by place of birth”.
Trump, who ran for the presidency on anti-establishment platform, appeared to be back in campaign form Thursday, speaking to a large group of supporters for the first time since his victory speech November 8.
