Top Trump advisers cheer as Democrats keep Nancy Pelosi as House leader
The challenge from Rep. Ryan will force Nancy Pelosi to incorporate a more inclusive leadership style, and also prompt her to propose the elevation of junior lawmakers within her party.
“Clearly this didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to”, Mr Ryan told reporters after the vote, which he described as “an uphill battle” from the beginning.
“Honoured to be elected by my colleagues to serve as Democratic Leader”. Pelosi’s 2002 victory over Hoyer in an earlier whip race launched her on the leadership career that eventually made her the first female House speaker, the US government position second in line to the presidency, after the vice president. She carried Obama’s Affordable Care Act across the finish line in the House and wrangled enough votes for the 2008 financial bailout when many Republicans balked. It was a testament to her vote-counting skills and to her ability to hang onto power even in dark days for Democrats, as they confront a capital that will be fully controlled by the GOP next year. Although he lost to Ms Pelosi, he earned one-third of votes from Democratic House members – which is considered to be a significant defection. Sánchez is also chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
Before the election, the National Republican Congressional Committee trolled Pelosi. Pelosi herself declared as soon as he announced that she already had two thirds of the delegation sown up. She has been a longtime supporter of same-sex marriage, reproductive rights and other progressive issues.
During a closed-door meeting, 134 Democrats out of 198 endorsed Pelosi – defeating a challenge by Ohio Rep.
“As we continue to discuss how we communicate the values of liberty, justice and dignity for all Americans, many members have come forward eager to participate”, she wrote in a letter Friday.
Voting behind closed doors, Pelosi obtained 134 votes to 63 for Congressman Tim Ryan of OH, who mounted his candidacy for the post after the surprise presidential victory of Donald Trump on November 8.
“People are recognizing that the real America is in places like Akron, and Youngstown and Cleveland, more than it is in some highfalutin neighborhoods in Manhattan or Georgetown”, said Ryan. He signaled a desire to reach out specifically to working class and blue collar voters in the Rust Belt. I’m not going to pay attention to, ‘I can’t step in a union hall.’ I’m a woman of steel in there. His staff said he spent much of the Thanksgiving break making calls to his colleagues and they believed it would be a close race. “It’s the issue that unites us”, the OH lawmaker said after his loss. “We now have a leadership that listens to what we are saying”. Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-OR) expressed frustration over the selection of Pelosi. The White House has not formally weighed in. He had said on Tuesday that he was “within striking distance” of besting Pelosi.
