Top 5 Things Ed Orgeron Needs To Do in 2017
There were numerous reports for the past month of LSU courting Tom Herman at Houston and Jimbo Fisher at Florida State as potential replacements for next season, with Orgeron being a long shot to retain the position.
LSU announced Saturday that interim head coach Ed Orgeron has earned the full-time role with the university after amassing a 5-2 record as Les Miles’ replacement.
LSU fired Miles on September 26, just four games into the season, before promoting Orgeron as interim coach.
Orgeron took over head coaching duties from former coach Les Miles when the latter was sacked after LSU’s 2-2 start that featured losses to Wisconsin and Auburn. Orgeron took over as the interim coach after the Tigers started the season 2-2.
Earlier this week as rumors swirled about the security of Texas coach Charlie Strong’s job, WNBA player and Texas alumni Imani Boyette noticed something odd in her husband, defensive lineman Paul Boyette as he praised his coach in interviews.
Texas acted quickly to snag Herman, who has only two years of experience as a head coach but is 22-4 with the Cougars, with a 9-3 mark this season after Friday’s loss to Memphis. “(LSU athletic director) Joe (Alleva) and I had a great conversation but I feel confident that he’s going to be with us”.
What we did get through was a high-powered offensive football game with big plays all over the place.
Orgeron described the LSU job as his dream job, and became emotional when describing what it meant to him to be coaching the Tigers. “He’s been here all along”, Alleva said. “I think he’s definitely gone”, a source close to Herman said.
Kiffin, the current offensive coordinator at Alabama who Orgeron worked for at Tennessee, is one of the reported candidates to be the Tigers’ next offensive coordinator.
LSU’s wins with Coach O as the top shelf guy were over Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Missouri, and Texas A&M, probably the most noteworthy outing of that bunch as they hung 54 on the Aggies. “We understand what you gave to us and the accountability we have to the state of Louisiana, to LSU and everybody that’s played here before”.
“I want coach O to stay”, Guice said.
A source told ESPN this week that Texas had decided it would fire Strong after the Longhorns lost to the Kansas Jayhawks last Saturday. We’ll see how he proves himself with him being back in the spotlight, but casting doubt based on a coaching record that is mostly made up from events that transpired a decade ago seems unideal.
“There are a lot of unsubstantiated rumors about LSU’s coaching search”, the statement read.
