US sanctions North Korea over nuclear test
Vice foreign minister Han Song Ryol warned the new sanctions would lead to increased tensions between North Korea and its Western enemies, while accusing the United Nations of hypocrisy.
What are the new sanctions?
Coal exports will be cut by about 60 percent under a strict new sales cap. He estimates North Korea has generated more than $160 million since 2000 from buildings and monuments in places like Namibia, Congo, Botswana and Senegal.

Japan and South Korea found little room left to tighten sanctions, however.
A source close to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe praised the Security Council resolution, calling it so effective as to render unilateral sanctions nearly unnecessary.
Also included, however, are officials of the General Association of Korean Residents, a pro-Pyongyang organization in Japan. The fifth test came just eight months after Pyongyang’s fourth nuclear detonation in January and the launch in February of a long-range rocket.
“Sanctions will inevitably escalate tensions”, the ministry said. This provision especially targets Chinese companies who assist Pyongyang with banking. Chinese company Dandong Hongxiang Industrial Development, suspected of supporting Pyongyang’s nuclear program, also fell under Seoul’s new sanctions.
In Seoul, Yonsei University’s Choi Jong-kyun questioned the need for such an agreement, telling VOA, “Do we have not enough deterrence and information sharing with the USA vis-à-vis North Korea?”.
“We categorically reject the UN Security Council resolution on sanctions against our country”, Han said.
The United States used so-called secondary sanctions on foreign firms that deal with banned entities to pressure Iran, and the measures were credited by sanctions experts as key to inducing Tehran to compromise on its nuclear programme. It will take decades, and starts with sitting down at the table with Kim Jong Un, and helping him open up and develop his economy.
“Japan will consider further measures depending on moves by North Korea and the global society”, he said. To prevent North Korean officials from raising funds by masquerading as officials of financial institutions, the resolution also called on each nation to expel individuals working as representatives, or on behalf, of banks.
