Amazon Opens Convenience Store with a Twist
The news comes days after reports that rival Walmart had opened two 4,000-square-foot Pickup with Fuel stores also built around more convenient shopping for essentials.
The store is equipped with the same technologies that you find in advanced machine learning-computer vision, sensor fusion etc.
There is now only one store in the world and it is located in the Seattle, Washington. In Amazon’s new grocery store concept, called Amazon Go, you can literally grab your food and walk out, no checkout required.
In a nutshell, Amazon Go allows shoppers to walk into a shop, pick up the items they need and walk straight out again.
Alternatively buyers may use the Apple Store shopping app for iPhone and iPad to pay for items in brick-and-mortar convenience stores or any physical stores without a register. Amazon Go automatically charges their account and sends a receipt to their phone.
Only Amazon employees can hit up the Seattle store, though the company has plans to open to the public in early 2017.
It is now open to Amazon employees only as it is in a beta-testing stage, but will open to the general public from early next year.
Interested users may sign up here for email updates and get notified when the store launches.
An ambitious project that has apparently been in the works for four years, Amazon Go seeks to do away with the nuisance of waiting in lines.
One of the biggest problems could be if the technology doesn’t notice that a shopper picked up an item to look at it and then put it back.
“We offer delicious ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options made fresh every day by our on-site chefs and favourite local kitchens and bakeries”.
The store will sell regular grocery items like bread and milk as well as artisanal cheeses and locally made chocolates. “As the meal kit industry struggles due to the shipping/logistics aspect, Amazon Go could be a venue where they could succeed”.
