Charlie Strong issues statement regarding dismissal from Texas
After prolonged rumors the Texas Longhorns were going to fire Strong after another disappointing season, the organization pulled the trigger this afternoon, canning the well-liked, yet underperforming head coach.
Contract details were not immediately released, and must still be approved by Texas’ Board of Regents. At a tradition-rich program like Texas, and with a salary in excess of $5 million per year, expectations for Strong were naturally high. He led the team to a one-loss season and a Peach Bowl victory over Florida State in his first year at the helm.
University of Texas Head football Coach Tom Herman announced the hiring of four assistant coaches.
Of course, Herman could potentially convince any of them to flip before National Signing Day in the likely event they initially commit elsewhere, but he’ll have to make up ground quickly without significantly recruiting them as realistic targets for Houston prior.
After the offensive output both Houston and Texas enjoyed this season, Longhorns fans can at least stay upbeat about the prospects of continued success scoring points next season. On to the next era with the hottest name in college football coaching right now, Tom Herman.
Herman, who once worked under Brown as a graduate assistant, gave the former coach a hug before speaking. He spent three years in Meyer’s program as offensive coordinator, taking home the Broyles Award for the nation’s top assistant coach in his final season.
“We’re prepared for this job”, Herman said. Strong then hired Tulsa’s Sterlin Gilbert to bring Art Briles’ brand of power spread to Austin this season, which had promising initial results, but, Texas sits at.
Charlie Strong completed his second consecutive 5-7 season in Austin and lost seven games in all three of his seasons at Texas. Herman had the Cougars ranked as high as sixth nationally in 2016, but losses to Navy, SMU and Memphis sunk Houston and left them in fourth in their division of the American Athletic Conference.
Co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Craig Naivar will also follow Herman from Houston, according to Sports Illustrated.
“In his short time in Houston, Tom Herman elevated the Houston Football program to new heights, and we are grateful for his contributions to our program”.
That could happen as soon as Sunday, when the University plans a news conference. The Longhorns had a decade-long run of 10-win seasons under Mack Brown from 2000-2009, a span that included one national championship and playing for another. Strong finished 16-21 in three seasons, the worst record by winning percentage in school history.
“It can’t be okay to show up two minutes late for a tutor but not be okay to show up two minutes late for a position meeting”, Herman said.
Herman got his coaching start in 1998 at none other than Seguin’s own Texas Lutheran University.
He said he met with Fenves and Perrin overnight Friday and was “very impressed with their unified vision and commitment to football”. The feeling was that Texas was Herman’s first choice all along and that the negotiations with LSU were only used as a mechanism to push Texas into making a decision on Strong and possibly up their offer to Herman.
