Gallup: Americans’ Support For Electoral College Rises Sharply
Along with Suprun, 36 other electors planning to vote for Trump would have to abandon their vote for him – which is nearly beyond the realm of possibility.
The group, reported by Politico as the self-proclaimed “Hamilton Electors,” are made up of Democrats and see Kasich, a 2016 Republican presidential hopeful, as a leading compromise pick to convince Republican electors.
Hillary Clinton has 2.7 million more votes than Donald Trump, despite losing the presidential election, and the number is expected to rise.
Suprun previously indicated he would support Trump.
The anti-Trump electors, however, face a very steep climb.
The Electoral College, he noted, reflects the federal structure of the USA government, in which smaller states have influence disproportionate to their populations.
If no candidate receives a majority, the election will be thrown to the House of Representatives, with each state’s delegation voting collectively for a candidate.
But a majority of states bind their electors to the state’s popular-vote victor, complicating efforts to switch those votes.
“After a while, I get the impression it’s just a well-coordinated effort to try and sway electors…” My vote in CT is of no significance since our state is safely blue. The most prominent recount efforts are being led by Green Party nominee Jill Stein, who launched fundraisers to challenge the results in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
“But I urge my fellow Democrats to think hard before trying to undo the admittedly hard-to-explain electoral college”.
Americans’ support for keeping the Electoral College system for electing presidents has increased sharply.
The Dallas member says he is not happy with Trump’s post-election attacks on the First Amendment.
Instead, Suprun wrote, it was about having to cast his vote for someone “who shows daily he is not qualified for the office”.
The Kasich camp is pushing back on efforts to put forward his name on December 19.
If our elections were based exclusively on the popular vote, a Democratic presidential candidate would only concentrate their campaign on the urbanized states, knowing they could win the election in that manner, but this does not represent the majority of the states.
