Red Sox trade for White Sox ace Chris Sale
Chris Sale absolutely steamrolled the AL East in 2016.
They have acquired ace pitcher Chris Sale from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for highly touted prospects Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech.
The Boston Red Sox dramatically retooled to build anew after winning the World Series in 2013, but on Tuesday they revised the blueprint again to go all-in for another title chase. With a rotation that includes Sale, David Price, reigning AL Cy Young victor Rick Porcello and All-Star knuckleballer Steven Wright, a group that was ace-less two seasons ago sure seems stacked now.
Asked to describe the trade, which marries Sale with two of the last five AL Cy Young winners to form a “Big Three” rotation, Cashman turned to another sport to appropriately contextualize the significance. “We certainly wish he and his family all the best”.
The Red Sox handed Sale his sixth loss of the 2015 season with an 8-2 win over Chicago. Dombrowski said in a news conference.
“I really thought for sure he was going to end up in Washington”. “We dodged a bullet”.
Meanwhile, the Orioles are over here trying to talk about how Yovani Gallardo and Wade Miley are poised for bounce-back seasons and bumbling around apparently trying to re-sign Mark Trumbo instead of getting a real right fielder, which literally everyone, including the Orioles themselves, knows that they need.
“That’s a big one”.
Sale, an All-Star every year since becoming a full-time starter in 2012, went 17-10 with a 3.34 earned run average over his 32 starts with the White Sox this year.
The team can, and probably will, be able to slide under the $195 million payroll limit this season, especially if it can rid itself of a contract like the $13.5 million owed to Clay Buchholz. “We need to make sure we get more of those than we now have”.
Kopech, 20, was the Sox’ first round pick in the 2014 draft, going 33rd overall.
“[Sale] pitches with an edge”, said Farrell. He is the type of pitcher who will make a huge difference for the franchise, but it is also important to point out that the team dealt some important assets that had come up in other trade discussions.
Sale was sent home and suspended for five games after he destroyed the throwback jerseys that his team was scheduled to wear as part of a promotion. He lost $250,000 of his $9.15 million salary and also was fined about $12,700 the cost of the cut-up jerseys.
