Texas Republican Elector Says He Won’t Cast Ballot for Trump
The victor will be awarded all the electoral votes. Again, they will be cast on December 19 in Jefferson City. And Republican representatives will surely feel vast pressure to go along with the will of their voters, and make Trump president. Judging from his op-ed, Suprun’s vote will likely go to John Kasich.
So far, Clinton received votes than any other presidential candidate in history except Obama in his two victories.
Suprun said the Electoral College system “is fine as it now exists”. “This isn’t some obscure thing from the 19th century, it’s the majority of presidents this century”.
The group would have to convince 37 Republican electors to join them in order to reach 270 electoral votes, if all Democratic electors were to join in. Not only is it undemocratic, but it does not do what the founders intended it to do.
“They actually don’t really care in 35 states or so”, Richie said.
It’s because of the Electoral College that shifting demographics result in shifting outcomes.
Other presidential hopefuls who won the popular vote but lost the election include Democrat Al Gore in 2000, Democratic-Republican Andrew Jackson in 1824, Democrat Samuel Tilden in 1876 and Democrat Grover Cleveland in 1888. A National Popular Vote Compact has been proposed, meaning that states could eventually bypass the Electoral College, promising to give all their electoral votes to the party that wins the national – rather than state – popular vote. For example, if 99 percent of the population moved to NY, the state would receive a significant number of electoral votes. The popular vote was not recorded until the 1824 election, meaning that of the 49 elections in which a popular vote total was counted, Clinton’s margin over her opponent would be better than 22 percent of the winners – more than one out of every five.
Today, one Wyoming voter has roughly the same vote power as four NY voters.
And, adds the website Mic, “with both Clinton and President Barack Obama accepting Trump’s victory and vowing to work with the president-elect during the transition period between now and the January 20 inauguration, it’s exceedingly unlikely the faithless elector effort will gain further traction”.
Trump won Texas and its 38 Electoral College votes in the November 8 general election. Who or what does it truly represent?
It’s unlikely all of that would happen again, but after President Obama made the DNC an afterthought in favor of his Obama for America (OFA) affinity project, who knows what the future holds. Meanwhile, support for amending the U.S. Constitution to do away with the Electoral College has dropped from 62 percent in 2012 to only 49 percent.
OH and other states prohibit electors from voting for other candidates. If the Republican is a lock to win Kansas, why should Kansas Democrats bother to vote?
It’s no accident that the last time Congress debated abolishing the Electoral College, after the nail-biter 1968 election, some of the strongest voices of opposition came from the few African-American House members and from Jewish organizations lobbying from the outside.
Personally, I would like to see an Electoral College on a representative scale, similar to some states’ primaries.
“Plaintiffs are entitled to exercise their judgment and free will to vote for whomever they believe to be the most qualified and fit for the offices of President and Vice President, whether those candidates are Democrats, Republicans, or from a third party”, reads a legal brief signed by attorney Jason Wesoky of Denver, according to Politico. He also outperformed in rural areas of battleground states like Florida and North Carolina, both of which he won.
