Democrats aim to rebuild the blue political wall in Midwest
America’s electoral college system has gotten more knocks as Hillary Clinton amassed more than 2.5 million popular votes than the President elect, Donald Trump.
Suprun said the Electoral College system “is fine as it now exists”.
Three states that have voted for the compact were controlled by Republicans.
The change in views is unsurprisingly due to Republicans and leaning independents, who largely were at a disadvantage in the Electoral College before President-elect Trump changed the map. The number of eligible voters in the country grew by an estimated 10.7 million between 2012 and 2016, according to the Pew Research Center, and there were 6.9 million more presidential votes-and counting-cast this year than four years ago.
It is not until well after Election Day that electors meet in their states to vote for the candidate their party represents and a candidate is officially declared the victor. We don’t need to tinker with the method of electing our presidents to give us more, even if the victor calls it a “rigged system”. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, so all of these are saying for that reason…and many others, I should change my vote. Similarly, in 2000, Democrat Al Gore won the popular vote by more than 500,000 votes but lost the Electoral College narrowly to George W. Bush. A third party candidate, Ross Perot, received nearly 19 percent.
People protest against the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States, out in front of Trump Tower in New York, New York, Nov. 9.
“It is an election of electors among the states the way the founding fathers set it up”, Holmes said. The bill specifies that Ohio’s electors will be those chosen by the national popular vote victor.
The other 302 are technically (we’ll get back to that in a second) bound to vote for their party’s candidate, or, in other words, the candidate who won the state’s electoral votes. In every democracy of the world that would ensure that she became president. Barbara Boxer of California filed legislation to amend the Constitution in favor of doing away with the Electoral College.
“We hope that once the first Republican peels away, once we have one who is courageous enough to stick to their morals, then we’ll see a wave of support”, he said.
There are some voices calling for the popular vote to decide our president. But that could easily mean that the American people would have a choice between a candidate of the pro-choice party and a candidate of the pro-gun party.
