Man arrested in ex-NFL player’s death; sheriff defends probe
At some point, Normand said, McKnight got out of his auto and continued the argument while leaning down see eye-to-eye with Gasser, who was in the driver’s seat of an Infiniti sedan.
Some TV networks cut away from the news conference as Normand then recited vulgar, expletive-filled comments he said members of his investigative team had received from people angry about the decision to release Gasser on Thursday. When authorities arrived at the scene, Gasser handed them his gun and confessed to shooting McKnight, who was reportedly unarmed. It should be noted that McKnight was unarmed when he approached Gasser’s vehicle, although a handgun belonging to his stepfather was found in his vehicle.
Johanna and Jonathan McKnight want justice for their brother, and said they are willing to wait. McKnight died on the scene. “Thursday night I had nothing to corroborate or nothing to contradict his statement because the witnesses that we had at that point in time didn’t see anything”. “I don’t know, but they did”.
“That’s why on Thursday evening, only faced with and only having Mr. Gasser’s statement, we thought (it best that) an arrest not be made for strategic reasons until we could get other witnesses”, Normand said. Normand said police had conducted at least 160 interviews and contacted about 70 businesses to try to get surveillance video, reports the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
The investigation was delayed because witnesses were reluctant to come forward, Normand said, but people on social media argued that the fact that Gasser is white was a key factor in delaying the arrest.
Normand says the shooter was very cooperative through the process, ten hours of interviews and a consent to search his home. “And the only way it’s proportional is if McKnight was threatening serious bodily injury or death”.
McKnight was signed to Saskatchewan’s practice roster on September 26, and he ran for 150 yards in his first CFL start on October 15 as the Roughriders beat Toronto 29-11.
McKnight also played college football with the University of Southern California Trojans.
McKnight was selected in the fourth round of the 2010 National Football League draft by the NY.
McKnight had a 107-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in 2011, and it remains the longest play in Jets history.
The Louisiana sheriff overseeing the case of a gunman accused of fatally shooting ex-NFL running back Joe McKnight announced manslaughter charges Tuesday – and then lashed out at the community for its response to the killing. Cardell Hayes is charged with second-degree murder.
A road-rage incident turned fatal shooting was not the way anybody would have imagined or hoped Joe McKnight would pop back into headlines.
When asked if he thought reading the comments out loud would change anything, Normand said he hoped it would.
