Nathan Eovaldi improved to 11-2 this season despite a mediocre performance that saw him give up three runs on seven hits and three walks over 5.2 innings.
The White Sox are now -182 with a total of 8 when they visit Fenway Park Thursday.
The White Sox (50-52) also got a solid effort from their bullpen, which allowed just one run by three relievers in 3 1/3 combined innings.
The left-hander tied his season high with eight strikeouts to counterbalance the walks and twice prevented the Yankees (58-45) from tying the score while down a run in the fourth and fifth innings. Diego Moreno replaced Mitchell and hit Jose Abreu with a pitch before he allowed Cabrera’s three-run homer. The 30-year-old native of Indiana has won only one of his last five turns at home – a triumph over Toronto on July 9 in which he tossed a four-hit shutout.
Abreu extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI double in the first that put the White Sox ahead.
His family and the Chicago White Sox, for whom he spent most of his 18-year career, said Pierce died Friday after a battle with gall bladder cancer.
Shortstop Alexei Ramirez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs on a solo homer in the second and run-scoring double in Chicago’s two-run seventh.
