White Man and Cops Working Together Again
Although the initial picture of the cleats had the year of McKnight’s birth wrong (1983 instead of 1988), Bush vowed to fix the mistake. The football player was struck once in the chest, once in the right shoulder and once in the left hand.
Jefferson Parish (La.) Sheriff Newell N.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said the Thursday incident involving McKnight happened about 2:43 p.m.in Terrytown, a suburb of New Orleans.
Normand said Gasser, 54, was released from custody Thursday night. Witnesses say the two had been in a heated argument. And then this man stands over him and shoots him again like some kind of wild animal! Fortunato said McKnight didn’t have a weapon on his person or near his body when found.
In a protest and press conference in New Orleans on Friday, NAACP leaders called for justice.
Gasser remained at the scene until police arrived and turned his gun over to the authorities. One woman held a sign saying “This is murder”.
Normand said he did not want to go into detail about the investigation, saying that he did not want to taint any prospective witnesses that might still come forward.
But he did reject a number of accounts in local media speculating about the shooting.
Authorities said Gasser shot McKnight three times from inside his vehicle with a semi-automatic handgun while McKnight was standing outside. “Let’s say, perhaps, hypothetically, that Joe McKnight was trying to get into my vehicle, and I thought that it was reasonable for me to use deadly force to keep him out of my auto, I can use deadly force, that’s the justifiable homicide”.
A group of ministers and community leaders from across New Orleans are asking for peace and patience during the aftermath of the shooting and the ongoing investigation into the incident.
The problem may have been that one man cut the other off in traffic, Normand said.
At some point, Gasser “discharged three rounds from a.40-caliber semiautomatic handgun from the driver’s seat of the blue Infiniti through the open passenger window”.
Others wondered if Gasser legitimately felt he was in danger, why in fact he just didn’t call police or drive away?
Later Gasser was issued a misdemeanor summons for simple battery.
A day earlier, the sheriff’s spokesman said authorities anticipated charging Gasser, but with what had not yet been determined.
McKnight was a high school football legend who entered powerhouse USC in 2007 hyped as “the next Reggie Bush” – a reference to the Trojans running back who won the Heisman Trophy just two years prior.
The sheriff was adamant that he had released Gasser so that the sheriff’s department could collect more evidence and witness testimony – as they believe there are still more to be found.
“It wasn’t justified what he did”. McKnight was black, Glasser is white.
“For a life to be lost so senselessly is just beyond description”, said JT Curtis, McKnight’s high school coach, who’s been head coach there for almost five decades.
McKnight played for the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs.

Center Nick Mangold called him “a great guy” and said, “I feel sad for him, his family and the guys that played with him”.
The Jets plan a moment of silence before Monday’s game to honor McKnight.
