Amy Schumer to play Barbie in Sony’s live-action movie
Amy Schumer arrives at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. And yes, that Barbie. It sort of makes her the ideal fit. According to Mattel, Barbie has had more than 150 careers. That’s a complete 180-degree turn from the “Barbie-as-Mary Poppins” idea that was floated past year, but Barbie’s career options have always been flexible, even if her limbs aren’t. Instead, the proposed plot for this film would change Barbie’s narrative into one of female empowerment and self-acceptance.
According to Variety, Schumer is close to a deal with Mattel and Sony Pictures to star as Barbie in a film in which she gets “kicked out of Barbieland for not being ideal enough and lands in a real-world adventure”.
In the film, Schumer’s Barbie will be portrayed as a misfit in the ideal “Barbieland”, eventually expelled and forced to contend with living in the real world where she discovers her uniqueness is an advantage.
According to what sources told Variety, Sony and Mattel seem to have chosen a script by Hilary Winston, and Schumer and her sister, Kim Caramele, will give it rewrites. The film is now working on casting, while production is set to kick off in the spring of 2017, with a possible release to come in the summer of 2018. Production is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2017. After adventures in the real world, she returns to Barbieland with life lessons for its residents. Now comes Sony’s next trick: tapping comedian Amy Schumer to play Barbie herself.
Schumer has spoken out about body issues before.
Sounds rather like ‘Enchanted, ‘ then, but with a little less fairy tale magic and a lot more plastic fantastic. Barbie should also open up a whole new set of fans for Schumer, who’s mostly been known for her raunchy, very adult-oriented comedy.
