Defeated NC Gov. Pat McCrory Will Meet With Trump
LGBTQ advocates say one piece of legislation played a significant role in Attorney General Roy Cooper’s victory in the governor’s race.
North Carolina’s anti-LGBT law was a key factor in Governor Pat McCrory’s defeat at the ballot box, polling has showed.
Roy Cooper is the new governor-elect of North Carolina. This time around McCrory was weighed down by a law he signed limiting LGBT rights and was unable to generate the same voter support that lifted Republicans Donald Trump and Richard Burr to victory in the state.
State government revenue surpluses also could make it easier for both Cooper and Republicans to get what they want.
Brad Adcock will serve as Cooper’s legislative director, overseeing what’s likely to be a contentious relationship with the Republican-led House and Senate. Boycotts over the law have cost North Carolina millions of dollars and hundreds of jobs.
They also pointed to McCrory’s background on energy issues, mentioning that he had opened North Carolina up to fracking through the Energy Modernization Act in 2014.
Governor-elect Roy Cooper said he’s ready to get to work. People go. They use the bathroom they feel is appropriate. The votes could happen just before a special session of the General Assembly that McCrory is expected to call for Tuesday to consider funding state recovery initiatives. The ordinance would have allowed people to use restrooms aligned with their gender identity.
“That is just going to be a very hard thing to deal with”. “As to how we deal with it, I don’t think anybody knows the answer to that”. “-Pat-McCrory-conceded-to-his-Democratic-challenger” class=”local_link” target=”_blank”>every legal vote is counted properly”, McCrory’s campaign spokesman Ricky Diaz said in a statement. “Let’s finish the job and repeal HB2”, Cooper said to a crowd that then erupted in cheers.
According to The Hill newspaper, Trump transition aide Sean Spicer on Tuesday told reporters McCrory is set to meet with the president-elect in New York City after a transition fundraising breakfast, but offered no additional details.
Over a thousand North Carolinians were arrested in the largest state-government focused civil disobedience campaign in U.S. history (arrests that would later be thrown out by a state superior court judge).
“The chatter about adding a seat or two to the Supreme Court arose about two minutes after the election”, when it was clear Democrats had won control of the court, Ferrel Guillory, a North Carolina politics expert, told Business Insider.
Cooper will have one gubernatorial power that’s somewhat ironic, given what extended the race between him and McCrory by almost a month.
