Simmons Defends Kubiak’s Overtime Decision
Kansas City took over on the Denver 48-yard line and matriculated the football down the field, setting up a 34-yard field goal by Cairo Santos, which banked off the left upright and snuck through for the win.
Heading into Green Bay’s game at Philadelphia on Monday night, all 15 matchups on Thanksgiving weekend were won by teams with a superior or even turnover differential. “Although everyone’s disappointed, we played hard and went down swinging!”
But the loss did drop the Broncos (7-4) into a wild scramble for a playoff spot.
The Broncos are now in third place in the AFC West and have lost three of their four division games this season.
The win puts Kansas City a game ahead of Denver in the AFC West with an 8-3 record.
Gary Kubiak’s decision to kick a 62-yard field goal could wind up hurting the Broncos as the playoff race gets tighter.
During a timeout, he chose to go for the gusto. And while those who believe only in numbers will tell you that Denver would have been better off essentially punting for the tie, there are a lot of folks who continue to applaud Kubiak for playing for the win. Once again, Manning led the Broncos back and tied it with a 19-yard TD pass to Emmanuel Sanders with 36 seconds to play. That’s when Dante Hall broke free on an electrifying 93-yard punt return that proved to be the game-winner. The Chiefs responded with a 28-yard pass from Trent Green to Johnnie Morton, but Denver was up 23-17 in the fourth quarter.
The Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos came just inches away from producing the third tie of the 2016 National Football League season on Sunday night.
The Chiefs trailed, 24-16, in the closing seconds when quarterback Alex Smith completed a pass to wide receiver Tyreek Hill at the goal line. Up 17-16 with about three minutes left, the Broncos seemingly put the game away thanks to a handsome pass from Trevor Siemian to Bennie Fowler after the young QB read an all-out blitz, placing a flawless ball over Fowler’s shoulder.
The Broncos’ defense will be intact for the first time in weeks. And lesson learned. We had a lot of mistakes, a lot of penalties, a lot of busts in coverage. “I’m going to enjoy it, but we’ve got another game on Sunday”.
One of those sacks forced a fumble by Denver quarterback Trevor Siemian that was recovered in the Broncos end zone for a safety and gave Kansas City the first points of the game.
As Norwood trudged off the field, an angry Talib shoved him toward the sideline. But it wasn’t until late in the fourth quarter that the game really opened up.
“I’m just thankful to be a part of this team and just come out and contribute”, Winchester said.
“In a fourth quarter and overtime game, everybody is exhausted”, Marshall said. “We did overcome adversity, not just lifetime adversity but game adversity”.
We can’t talk about hapless teams without bringing up the winless Cleveland Browns. “We’re all good, man”.
“I think I’m pretty optimistic”, he said. “I’m not going to instruct a guy in that situation to go down”.
And he went for the extra point after Fowler’s 76-yard touchdown made it 23-16.
This was the trickiest decision of the game and perhaps the most critical call of the season. A 2-point failure and it’s still a seven-point cushion.
But if Kubiak is hesitant to delve into hindsight, the rest of us can.
Eric and Les said it best, if he plays for the tie Broncos Country kills Kubiak for being John Fox-like.
