Berry’s two INTs lift Chiefs over Falcons
“It’s frustrating to lose a game like this”, Falcons defensive end Jonathan Babineaux said.
But the Falcons went for two, and Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry picked off a Matt Ryan pass and took it the length of the field in the opposite direction for a ‘Pick-2, ‘ giving KC a 29-28 lead, which they would not surrender.
“How do they keep doing this!?” . Ryan thought he had a receiver, but Berry was right there to pick him off. Berry sprinted down the field and made it into the end zone untouched to give Kansas City two points. For the fourth time this season, the Kansas City Chiefs clawed their way to a victory they had no earthy business winning.
New Orleans Saints fans in need of a good laugh might want to take a look at how the Atlanta Falcons lost Sunday.
But a win is a win, no matter how flawed.
Call it a pick-two.
And who doesn’t love a guy who hands the football to his mom after he scores?
But first of all, Berry entered Sunday’s game a bit emotional.
Three of Kansas City’s big plays against the Falcons came on third or fourth down: Wilson’s 55-yard TD run on fourth-and-one, a 25-yard catch by Hill on third-and-10 and Wilson’s 21-yard reception on third-and-11.
Berry also intercepted a pass earlier in the game and returned it for a touchdown. Given his recent play Berry will be well within his rights to demand being the highest paid safety in the NFL.
NOTES: Falcons LT Jake Matthews was forced out of the game in the second quarter because of a left knee injury. On fourth-and-1 from the Atlanta 3, Reid dialed up a pass to Spencer Ware for the touchdown rather than taking the points, knowing well there was plenty of game left to be played. In nearly any other division that would be enough to run away with the top spot, but with the Oakland Raiders on 9-2, the Chiefs at the moment would have to settle with a Wild Card spot in the postseason. The Jaguars became the fifth team in National Football League history to post double-digit losses in six consecutive seasons, joining Tampa Bay (1983-94), Detroit (2001-06), Oakland (2003-09) and Cleveland (2008-13). Does it mean that Kansas City is a team of destiny that just won’t quit? He hasn’t hit paydirt in his last three games, but he has gone over the 100-yard mark seven times this season.
With a strip-sack on Alex Smith in the first quarterback, Beasley became the first Falcon to reach double-digit sacks since John Abraham in 2012.
The Falcons also got a stellar game from Devonta Freeman, who had 105 total yards (56 rushing, 49 receiving) and scored two rushing touchdowns.
A little help from their special teams wouldn’t hurt either, of course. (Albert Wilson, who’d scored on the fake punt, beat Ricardo Allen on a slant.) The raging offense rang up 418 more yards but fell one point short. Ryan is discussed at much greater length elsewhere, so for the purposes of this post we’ll leave it at this: Don’t go wishing Matty Ice a Berry Christmas.
