Al Gore meets with Donald and Ivanka Trump
Donald Trump has said he’d leave his business interests entirely in the hands of his children, who would not have an involvement in his administration.
Trump also referred to human-induced climate change as a hoax and had tweeted that “the concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive”.
Gov. Jerry Brown predicted Tuesday that President-elect Donald Trump will experience a political backlash internationally if he pursues policies that deny the impact of climate change.
After meeting with Trump, Gore had a slightly more optimistic take on the television reality star and wealthy NY real estate developer. Her husband, Jared Kushner, is one of Trump’s most trusted aides. The couple is reportedly house-hunting in Washington. But get this: as the New York Times reported, the majority shareholder of Sanei’s parent company is the Development Bank of Japan, which is fully owned by the Japanese government. A group of 700 scientists are sending a blistering letter to Trump, urging him to take action on climate change and which reads in part, “We urge you to decide if you want your presidency to be defined by denial and disaster, or acceptance and action”.
Gore told supporters of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton last month that Trump would walk away from worldwide efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
Gore had a more upbeat take on Trump after huddling with the wealthy NY real estate developer.
Gore ran for president in 2000 and, although he won the popular vote, failed to win the Electoral College. However, it’s clear that environmentalists remain cautiously hopeful and fervently proactive in appealing to the president-elect’s reason.
Of the Trump clan, Ivanka is arguably the most susceptible to left-leaning ideology.
Actor Leonardo DiCaprio, for example, recently gave her a copy of his new National Geographic documentary on climate change, “Before the Flood”.
Stein also called out Trump for lawsuits from his campaign or supporters to halt recounts in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. “They both have the right positions on climate change”, he explained. “The scientific consensus is in, and the argument is now over”.
Whether Trump, who famously called climate a Chinese conspiracy, is willing to backtrack on some of his most outrageous policy promises remains to be seen.
