Obama and Trump hurled insults, now trade pleasantries
A new PPP poll unveiled on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” Thursday showed just how out of touch Donald Trump’s supporters are with the real world. “And they came here to live in the shadows”.
Trump already had acted to avoid some conflicts of interest.
The president-elect is said to be considering two more military leaders – retired general David Petraeus, who also headed the Central Intelligence Agency, and retired navy admiral James Stavridis – for secretary of state along with at least eight others, all civilians.
Clearly the doomsday scenarios have faded in people’s minds.
Trump said he would announce December 15 what steps he would take to avoid conflicts.
But Carson says he does want to create mechanisms that would allow people to end their dependence on such programs and take care of their own needs. President-elect Donald Trump has largely remained silent on the issue, simply calling Mattis the right fit for the role. Last week, Trump tweeted he’ll cut ties to his business “in total” to focus on running the country. Republicans voters weren’t almost as skeptical of Bill Clinton or Barack Obama on that count, and fully 49 percent of GOPers thought O had done a good job with his cabinet eight years ago. Pew’s numbers are very, very different: They have his rating at a dismal 37/58, which is hard to believe after his big Carrier win.
Here’s what Stavridis said as he walked through the lobby at Trump Tower: “When I first heard there was a short list, I thought they were referring to short people”.
In addition, Trump continues to lag far behind his predecessors on his approval rating and views of his transition process so far. If their status is revoked, all of them will go back to living lives of secrecy. “In its more than 240 years, the US military has never attempted a coup”.
The selection of Kelly would be serving alongside retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn, who Trump picked for national security adviser, and retired Marine general James Mattis, who, if confirmed by the Senate, would be defense secretary. Thanks to Trump, that pretense hasn’t just been broken.
President-elect Donald Trump is receiving an average of one presidential intelligence briefing a week, according to US officials familiar with the matter, far fewer than most of his recent predecessors.
Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett, a Republican who heads the U.S. Conference of Mayors, says he thinks these comments about some urban areas were part of Trump’s campaign and his effort to woo rural voters. Trump? Eleven percent. The numbers look similar for the question about explaining his policies and plans. This, of course, could owe to the controversy over another Trump pick, chief strategist Stephen Bannon, and Bannon’s ties to the so-called “alt-right”.
But when it comes to two of Trump’s key campaign promises related to immigration, more than half of Americans don’t think he’ll accomplish it, the poll shows. So does the fact that people have been urging Trump to be more cautious post-election, both on and off Twitter.
Mr Trump also spent years fomenting the “birther” issue and trying to undermine Mr Obama with false claims that he was not a United States citizen, and therefore an illegitimate president. And it seems Americans are heeding that advice.
Most Americans – 57% of those surveyed – say they see “a lot” of discrimination against Muslims in society today. “In a time where authoritarian politics (threats towards journalists and protesters, etc.) are (increasingly) popular, we should put the USA military, active and retired, further away from the controls of the USA government, not closer”.
Those riding Trump’s coattails including House Speaker Paul Ryan, who jumped from 40 to 47 percent favorability since August.
