Lions to Host Gosder Cherilus on Free Agent Visit
Right tackle Gosder Cherilus visited the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday, two days after he was released by the Indianapolis Colts.
The Detroit Lions need consistency when it comes to their offensive line, specifically at right tackle. He spent his first five seasons as a starter with the Detroit Lions, who selected Cherilus with the 17th pick in the 2008 draft. His agent, Greg Diulus, told Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star that those problems are now a thing of the past: “He is very healthy and in great shape”. The Lions already have players to compete for their starting right tackle job and it doesn’t appear Cherilus is having trouble finding interested teams. His release came in an effort by the team to cut costs.
The Lions have about $2.7 million in available cap space. Besides Waddle and left tackle Riley Reiff, Cornelius Lucas – who’s entering his second year – is the only other tackle on the roster with NFL experience.
If Cherilus does indeed sign with the Bills, he’ll get to seek revenge on his old team, as the Colts and Bills square off in the regular season opener this year on September 13th. He could be acquired for the right amount of money and length since he’d be coming back to his old stomping grounds.
