Trump Says He’s Asked Obama For Advice On Cabinet Appointments
Trump has repeatedly promised to deport illegal immigrants and better enforce security at us borders.
Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett signed on to letter urging President-elect Trump not to end an immigration program. “And I will tell you, we obviously very much disagree on certain policies and certain things, but, you know, I really like him as a person”. It allows undocumented young people brought to the United States before the age of 16 to remain without fear of deportation as they pursue a higher education, work or engage in military service. Some have wonderful jobs. “And they’re in never-never land because they don’t know what’s going to happen”.
The shift in tone was striking for a former presidential candidate who ran on stopping illegal immigration and holding law breakers accountable.
The letter asks Trump to continue the Obama administration policy that prevents the deportation of so-called DREAMers – young immigrants who came to the United States before they were 16 years old and so named for meeting the requirements under the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act proposal that would have created a pathway to citizenship for them.
But they should also remember all those who were deported by President Obama and how little by little Obama decreased the number of undocumented immigrants during his nearly eight years in office. He could make the revocation of the executive order contingent on the passage of legislation so that dreamers wouldn’t be left in limbo. Or he could do nothing, leaving the order in place.
Though White House officials said the speech was planned before Donald Trump was elected, Obama’s remarks were clearly tailored to address some of Trump’s proposals.
For those critics who say that this would be just another amnesty, I’d say we shouldn’t – to use an apt metaphor – throw the baby out with the bathwater in this instance.
And after that, when “Dreamers” are encountered by law enforcement officials, “they would be put through the process”, said King.
“So rather than offer false promises that we can eliminate terrorism by dropping more bombs or deploying more and more troops or fencing ourselves off from the rest of the world, we have to take a long view of the terrorist threat”.
Trump spent years challenging Obama’s birthplace and whether he was eligible to serve as President, and he also vowed during the campaign to “repeal and replace” the President’s signature accomplishment, Obamacare.
Citing Branstad’s extensive experience with China, which included hosting its president, Xi Jinping, in the state years ago, as well as living in China decades before as an exchange student, Trump said Branstad would deliver for the U.S.as he’s delivered for the state.
Many of Trump’s advisers and Cabinet members – including his nominee for attorney general, Sen.
Obama called on his successor to complete the process of closing the detention center at Guantanamo Bay and maintain his administration’s ban on torture, both areas where Trump has indicated he’ll change course.
The Time cover reads, “Donald Trump: President of the Divided States of America” and the cover image features a photograph of the president-elect sitting in his private residence at Trump Tower.
“I have big announcements coming up today and tomorrow”, he declared. “And we have a very good dialogue”, he continued.
Time Editor Nancy Gibbs said the publication’s choice was a “straightforward” choice of the person who has had the greatest influence on events “for better or worse”.
