Keaton Jennings does a Kevin Pietersen in Mumbai
Mumbai: A dominant India will be eyeing to clinch the five-Test series against England with yet another comprehensive victory when the two teams square off in the fourth match of the series starting Thursday.
India have won 10, lost seven and drawn seven in 24 Test matches played at this venue.
Hameed’s loss due to a finger fracture sustained in Mohali is a big blow to England who will be hoping that the South Africa-born Jennings will step into the other youngster’s shoes seamlessly and perform well the hard role of opening the batting with Cook. “It would have been too far-fetched”, the England opener said after the end of the day’s play, with satisfaction writ large on his face. Only at Ferozshah Kotla, Delhi, he has taken more wickets in Tests – 23 at 14.
Cook earlier became the sixth batsman to score 2000 or more Test runs against India during his innings, when he reached 19. But the signs are that a score of 400 should put you in a good position.
It was a pre-meditated, and very skilful shot. So we will take a call in the evening, as I said, as to how much rest he needs or if he can go tomorrow as well.
“It’s been a dream come true and surreal that it’s come on debut”.
“It’s a clear message I knew was coming out”, Cook said.
“But I wonder whether that did kind of tie into the third game and there was a bit of hangover and we did go back into our shells a bit”.
A lot of water has flown down the river since then, but it would be the first time in years when Wankhede would not be reverberating with the chants of local lad “Sachin Sachin”.
“Not necessarily in the second innings, I think both times in the second innings we’ve applied ourselves – obviously using slightly different methods on each occasion – but it’s the first innings, twice, that has really hurt us”.
“It’s been an incredible day, an incredible 72 hours”.
‘India lead the five-Test series against England 2-0 after winning the second and third Test by 246 runs and eight wickets respectively.
Ashwin was impressed by England’s debutant but warned – from personal experience – all may not be quite as it seems with a pitch which is already giving him and his fellow spinners significant help. It’s out of my hands and it’s not controllable for me”, Jennings said, “If I play, two Tests, one Test, whatever in my career, hopefully I can make them two happy Tests. The Johannesburg-born Durham opener, drafted in for Mumbai as a replacement for the injured Haseeb Hameed, finished the 2016 County Championship as Division One’s top scorer with 1,548 runs at an average of 64.5 and he continued that stellar form at the Wankhede Stadium with a classy 112.
“Getting six wickets would have been nicer”.
“At the moment I’m feeling very comfortable and very English, despite my accent”, he joked to reporters at a news conference following a training session in India’s financial capital.
