Connecticut Green Party backs presidential recount efforts in other states
Stein and Reform Party candidate Rocky De La Fuente filed for the recount on Friday.
Stein discussed her candidacy and her attempts to be included in the presidential debates sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates during her remarks.
Republican Donald Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton by 10,704 votes out of almost 4.8 million ballots cast, which was a victory margin of two-tenths of a percentage point.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission met Monday and approved a timeline for the recount leading up to the federal deadline on December 13, but it rejected Stein’s request to do the counting by hand.
Armstrong added the recount in Branch County will take place in the courthouse annex conference room. Dane County Circuit Judge Valerie Bailey-Rihn ruled that Wisconsin’s 72 county clerks will not be required to count ballots by hand as Stein requested in a lawsuit filed on Monday, Attorney General Brad Schimel said in a statement.
If Michigan’s result were overturned in Clinton’s favor, Trump would still have 290 electoral votes.
The Clinton campaign, or whatever remains of it, doesn’t hold out any real hope that the outcome will change, but supports the recounts, on the ground the public ought to be assured of the integrity of the process.
Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and MI were battleground states where Trump edged out Clinton by relatively thin margins.
He said, during his research, he had personally been able to hack the type of voting machines used in MI – but he had not seen evidence the machines had been hacked during the actual election. “These concerns need to be investigated before the 2016 presidential election is certified. It’s about trust in the election system”.
But Frion is skeptical a hacker could change the vote total in Chippewa County. Personally, I wish that were not the case. That payment cleared the way for the recount to begin Thursday.
Stein’s campaign handed the Michigan Secretary of State a check for $973,250 on Wednesday.
The six-member commission Thomsen heads is equally split between Democrats and Republicans and voted unanimously to proceed with a machine recount. Perhaps ironically, those will be from ballots cast at precincts using touch screens. It is this very tendency of the media to be dishonest, but also to treat the people like they are dumb and to purport to tell them how and what to think, that drove many people to Trump, despite his flaws.
On its Twitter account, the Secretary of State reported the office has received the recount request, and it is now under review.
Stein has raised $5.8 million of the $7 million needed to cover fees and legal costs for recounts in the three states, according to her campaign website. His remarks came after a special meeting of the commission to plan for the recount.
Trump lashed out on Twitter over the recount news by falsely claiming he won the popular vote “if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally”.
Donald Trump carried MI by just over 10,000 votes. Trump was making a rhetorical remark in reaction to an opponent’s election challenge.
“I’ve never seen this kind of attack on poll workers, and on how this system works”, Thomsen said.
Bailey-Rihn ultimately sided with the state, finding that Stein and Clinton’s lawyers failed to show any irregularities that prove electronic tabulators could be problematic in the recount.
