Recount ends in Michigan after 3 days; ongoing in Wisconsin
The judge – Mark Goldsmith – affirmed a state court ruling which determined that the petitioner in the case, Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein, lacked standing.
In Pennsylvania, a judge ordered a hearing on the possibility of a statewide recount, with Trump’s campaign lodging complaints in saying that such a late start would make it impossible to complete the recount by the December 13 federal deadline, the Washington Post reported. “These concerns need to be investigated before the 2016 presidential election is certified”.
The recount in MI took a hit on Wednesday when a federal judge ordered for the process to be stopped entirely.
“This is an attack on our democracy by Trump and Michigan Republicans”, said Lou Novak, a Detroit resident and Green Party member said in a press release.
“Stein can not change the outcome of the presidential election”, Tabas said in the filing. It decided yesterday that Presidential Candidate Jill Stein didn’t have a right to call for a recount because she only won one percent of the vote in MI and had no chance of winning through a recount. That’s because she came in a distant fourth place with just one percent of the vote and had no hope of winning.
Of course, President-elect Donald Trump has not taken too kindly to her actions, or the idea of a recount.
Wisconsin Elections Commission spokesman Reid Magney said 34 of 72 counties have reported that they have completed their recounts. With the help of some of these Democrats, Stein raised almost $7 million dollars for the effort, almost double the $3.5 million she raised during the entire presidential election.
“This ruling is a huge victory for MI taxpayers and the rule of law”, Bursch reportedly said in a statement.
The Michigan elections board stopped the recount because of Goldsmith’s new ruling and plans to meet again Thursday. Her campaign is focused on verifying whether over 75,000 people did not cast votes for president in a state Trump leads by under 11,000 votes.
They have sought a recount of potentially more than 1 million paper ballots and a forensic examination of election system software in the six largest counties that use different kinds of paperless electronic voting machines.
Town of Ixonia ballots showed an additional vote cast for Johnson, while the Town of Watertown recount subtracted one from Clinton’s tally.
The county’s elections results were not certified because of a court battle over a state house race, and the law says if three voters from a precinct request a recount before certification, the request must be granted. She said that her team would be huddling with their attorneys to “figure out the best course forward”.
U.S. District Judge Paul Diamond in Philadelphia on Tuesday scheduled a hearing Friday on the request for a recount.
Stein’s campaign, who withdrew a recount request in a Pennsylvania state court, filed a lawsuit in federal court Monday morning seeking a statewide recount there. In the future, poll workers will hand count ballots post-election to verify the number of voted ballots packaged for transport match the voting machine total. Most of the 92 precincts being re-counted are in the Las Vegas area, with eight of the precincts in four other counties.
