Former congressman says Branstad will fit in ambassador role
Donald Trump offered China a gesture of goodwill on Wednesday, naming Terry Branstad, a long-time personal friend of President Xi Jinping, as ambassador to Beijing.
China is the United States’ largest trading partner in goods.
Kelly, the former head of the US Southern Command, has accepted the offer, CBS said on Wednesday, citing unidentified sources.
Branstad has experience working out trade deals with the Chinese which have been beneficial to Iowa’s farmers.

The appointment appeared to have lifted the political mood in Beijing, as it followed a spike in friction after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump departed from convention established since 1979, and took a congratulatory call from Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen.
The Chinese government reacted favorably to the pick.
In comments before the nomination was made official, China called Branstad an “old friend”.
Trump’s campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, brushed off the criticism, praising Pruitt’s record and telling reporters at Trump Tower: “We’re very accustomed to the naysayers and the critics”.

In 2013, he returned to Iowa as China’s incoming president and met with Branstad for a formal dinner in Des Moines between meetings in Washington with President Barack Obama and a trip to California.
Sen. Chuck Grassley said Branstad’s long track record as Iowa’s leader has prepared him thoroughly for the role.
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey says he had begun to explore a run for governor under the premise there might be an open seat if Gov. Terry Branstad finished his current term and didn’t seek re-election.
Jeff Kaufmann says it was not the plan all along for Branstad to leave office early so Reynolds could run as an incumbent in 2018.
In an interview with China Daily in September 2015 before Xi’s state visit to the US, Branstad fondly recalled his time with Xi. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, in a statement, noting that she was “thrilled to congratulate [Reynolds], who will become the first woman to serve our state as governor”. Trump hinted that Branstad could be his representative in Beijing in a speech in Sioux City, Iowa, two days before the election.
