Boult set to return for ODI opener against Australia
He had some help from the Black Caps, wicketkeeper BJ Watling put down a tough chance when Smith was on 13 and Colin Munro another when he was on 152, but also some solid assistance from his team mates.
Australia’s Steven Smith plays at a high ball against New Zealand during their one day worldwide cricket match in Sydney, Australia, Sunday, Dec. 4.
Maxwell smashed 136 runs off just 89 balls in the Prime Minister’s XI match against England in Canberra previous year. First slip sometimes has a better look and he was unsure.
“I guess he’s talked about it in the prep and got a 170 and won the game by himself, so definitely [it] instils some confidence with all the batters, and to go out there you want match winners and he’s definitely one of them”.
“It was a bit freaky”. And it was nice to see Matthew Wade come in at the end and play a good little cameo as well.
Hesson declined to stick the boot into the under-fire Aussies, saying he expected the country’s test troubles to have no bearing on the one-day side. They all pitched the ball far too short, allowing easy runs to Smith – who maximised multiple “free hit” opportunities – in particular.
Trent Boult has been ruled fit for New Zealand’s three-match one-day tour of Australia while the Black Caps can’t wait to unleash raw paceman Lockie Ferguson, who’s been clocked at 150km/hr. Martin Guptill said he was at point at the time but claimed he wasn’t in on the conversation over the review.
Other then Smith, the team management would be chuffed by the performance of Head and the bowlers all of whom took wickets at regular intervals.
Smith’s eclipsed the previous high score of 162, made by South Africa’s AB de Villiers in the 2015 World Cup against the West Indies.
It was the fourth highest one-day score by an Australian on home soil, the seventh highest ODI score by an Australian and was the best 50-over innings of his career. Smith beat that score and finished with 164. Despite Australia’s ODI slump in 2016, Warner and Steven Smith, the captain, have been two of the most prolific run-scorers in the format in 2016. I think it was out so of course I’m glad. Not much was going through my head.
“Those things happen and can be tidied up pretty quickly once he gets used to that kind of intensity”.
“They’ll be coming out hard and trying to get the trophy off us. Fortunately, it got given not out”.
Among the New Zealanders marking their run-ups with paint and tape measure ahead of the coin toss were Ferguson, Boult and Henry, while Southee looked on and gave throwdowns to the batsmen in a reasonable indicator he was sitting the match out.
