Stein pays $3.5M for Wisconsin recount
Green Party officials filed Friday for a recount in Wisconsin, following reports of voting discrepancies, and were seeking a deeper investigation into the election results, which handed the state to Donald Trump two weeks ago. Election officials rejected Stein’s request to have votes recounted by hand Monday.
“She is 2.2 million votes behind Donald Trump”, said McDaniel on Tuesday, the day before Stein’s camp was expected to file by deadline asking for the MI recount.
Mrs Clinton’s campaign has said it will participate in Wisconsin’s recount. State Bureau of Elections Director Chris Thomas said if such delays occur, “we’re going to be out of any ability to make the 13th”. As Clinton said in her concession speech, “I still believe in America, and I always will. It gives you some resilience, because it’s hard to hack 8000 different towns at the same time”, Ansolabehere said.
Many counties provided estimates for a hand count, which increases the cost. Those votes cast using a touch screen will be counted by hand. Feuerhelm explained that the touch-screen machines record a paper ballot that can’t be sent back through a machine to be re-tabulated.
Over the weekend, Clinton campaign general counsel Marc Elias wrote in a blog post that the campaign has not seen any evidence that the results of the votes in those states was inaccurate. Thomas said a full recount would likely need to be complete by December 13 to comply with federal law and ensure Michigan’s votes are counted when the Electoral College meets December 19. Michigan’s Republican secretary of state, Ruth Johnson, said the fee may not cover half the cost. “The Stein camp has acknowledged there is zero evidence of fraud or tampering and has acknowledged the results of the election are not expected to change”.
“There will be charges that the process is being slowed or that it’s not being done right”, he said. “I don’t have any suspicion that there’s widespread fraud in Pierce County or Wisconsin”. She is also pursuing recounts in MI and Pennsylvania.
For instance, Chippewa County’s vote counting machines are not connected to a network or the Internet.
Branch County Clerk Terry Kubasiak was out of the office and unavailable for comment Wednesday.
But could a recount help Mrs. Clinton? Under state policy, the recount will be conducted by hand. The recount is open to the public to observe.
Some experts though question whether the same attention should be given to states Clinton won by similar margins. In Wisconsin, Trump won 1,404,000 votes, according to the state’s unofficial results.
The Wisconsin recount will include examining by hand the state’s almost 3 million ballots. The state Elections Commission has ordered the recount to begin Thursday if Stein pays the $3.5 million cost by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. A lawyer in the effort, Larry Otter, said the filing is unprecedented in Pennsylvania. Stein filed on Monday.
