Klay Thompson of Warriors drops 60 in 29 minutes of playing time
The most impressive thing about Klay Thompson’s 60-point performance against the Indiana Pacers Monday night is that he played just 29 minutes.
A further 20 points in the third quarter gave Thompson the highest individual game tally of his career and the highest of any player in the National Basketball Association this season as the Warriors improved to 18-3.
The Golden State Warriors (18-3) and Los Angeles Clippers (16-6) will renew their rivalry in a heavyweight clash at the Staples Center on Wednesday evening.
The last National Basketball Association player to score more than 60 points in a game was LeBron James, who had 61 against Charlotte on March 3, 2014.
Thompson also became the first Golden State player since 1974 to score over 60 points.
The Warriors, a dominant team featuring four All-Stars, began celebrating their victory after Thompson’s signature turnaround three-pointer.
BY THE NUMBERS * In terms of wing-player comparisons, one has to go back to Kobe Bryant’s 81-point game against the Toronto Raptors on January 22, 2006.
Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Clippers (+4.5, 224.5)The Los Angeles Clippers told people they were contenders to the Golden State Warriors in the Pacific Division and the Western Conference the previous two seasons, they just failed to prove it on the court. Thompson was 21-33 shooting, including 8 of 14 from the 3-point line.
Then again, if Thompson were really to go for it, with how locked in he was, you can see him going for a 20-25 point quarter.
“I never would have thought I was capable of that“, the 26-year-old said of Bryant’s feat.
Alas, it never came, and Golden State ended up outscoring IN 26-23 IN the final 12 minutes even with its stars on the bench.
Previously this season, the highest scorers were Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook with 51 in an overtime game and Anthony Davis with 50 in regulation for New Orleans.
Had the Pacers found a way to stay close to the Warriors, Thompson undoubtedly would have scored more. Klay joined Barry, Wilt Chamberlain and Joe Fulks as the only players in franchise history to reach the 60-point plateau as well.
It’s hard – really hard – to carry out a 60-point game with high efficiency and high volume.
In fact, Thompson scored 40 points in the first half, just ten points fewer than the entire Pacers team.
Did we mention this team also has Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant?
And if you don’t think that was entertaining enough for you, maybe you should start watching the 49ers or the Kings, who are so much more entertaining than those mean, boring Warriors.
In Dallas, Kemba Walker scored 19 points, Nicolas Batum had 14 points and 15 rebounds, and Charlotte came back to defeat the Mavs. They ranked sixth in points scored per game at (108.7).
