Trump expected to pick Puzder for Labor
In the same statement, Mr Puzder said he agreed with Mr Trump that “the right government policies can result in more jobs and better wages for the American worker”.
If Trump’s new labor secretary, whose CKE Restaurants runs the Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s burger chains, is anxious about such wage erosion, it comes through about as clearly as the muddled voice over the drive-through speaker.
The International Franchise Association praised Puzder Thursday, calling his potential appointment an “exceptional choice”.
To rectify the system’s flaws, Puzder called for “a robust legal immigration program, including incentives for highly educated people to come to the USA and a guest-worker program; a pathway to adjusted status for those here illegally now; and special relief for the children of undocumented immigrants”. “He opposes the Department of Labor’s overtime rule and actually claimed that what workers “lose in overtime pay they gain in stature and sense of accomplishment”.
Puzder, 66, is a vocal critic of government regulation and opposes a $15 minimum wage, broader overtime pay and the Affordable Care Act.
Trump’s recent appointments have reflected his desire to turn to business leaders – who also were campaign donors. Puzder declined to comment via a spokesman.
Last year, the fast-food CEO made more in one day ($17,192) than one of his full-time minimum wage workers would make in a year ($15,130), according to TalkPoverty.
“They’re always polite, they always upsell, they never take a vacation, they never show up late, there’s never a slip-and-fall, or an age, sex, or race discrimination case”, he said. This particular industry has been subject to national pressure as protesters seek a minimum wage increase at the federal level. “Deportation should be pursued only when an illegal immigrant has committed a felony or become a ‘public charge, ‘” Puzder wrote in a July op-ed in The Wall Street Journal on July 14.
Prior this year, the Obama organization updated the country’s extra time rules, attempting to make them more liberal to laborers.
Connecticut Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro was critical of Trump for choosing Puzder.
Donald Trump’s pick as Labor Secretary telegraphs his plan to use the Executive Branch of the government to declare war on the rights and progress of United States workers. After the union leader revealed Wednesday that fewer jobs remained in Carrier’s Indianapolis plant than President-elect Donald Trump had promised, Trump launched into a Twitter tirade against him.
He noted that employees at Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s “make biscuits from scratch….bread chicken tenders by hand, prepare complex burger orders, hand-scoop the ice cream for milkshakes”.
Worker advocacy groups also denounced Puzder’s expected nomination. “He’s objectified and undermined women in an effort to sell hamburgers”. Even then, speculation was rampant that Puzder would be labor secretary.
“I like our ads”, he told the publication Entrepeneur. I like attractive women eating burgers in bikinis.
U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer told USA Today that the selection of Puzder’is “the surest sign yet that the next Cabinet will be looking out for the billionaires and special interests, instead of America’s working class”.
