Patrick Roberts hailed by Celtic and City bosses
Caltex Socceroo playmaker Tom Rogic has shown he can match it with English Premier League opposition after Celtic’s draw with Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League overnight.
The young winger is on an 18-month loan from City to Celtic, having arrived in Manchester at some expense from Fulham a year ago.
Asked whether he felt wanted at City, Roberts added: “Yes, of course”.
Celtic brought an estimated 4,000 fans to the game and, for the most, their behaviour was praised.
This will be the first Premier League game Fernandinho has missed this season, and Guardiola said: “He’s so important for us”.
And with Guardiola only signing a three-year contract at the start of the season, Vieira is already being touted as one of the contenders to replace the Spaniard when he eventually departs. We also have to be realistic as well, it’s always going to be a real challenge for us [to qualify] and we have to be different because we don’t have the resources of all these other teams.
“He has good quality with the winger, one against one”.
“I am so happy for the young players”.
Manchester City’s interest in striker Moussa Dembele could see Celtic secure yet another loan deal for Patrick Roberts.
“It was a good game for Kelechi to play [against Celtic]”, he added.
City have faced criticism for their ability to create atmosphere at the Etihad, especially on Champions League nights.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers backed Roberts to go on and enjoy a decorated City career. I joined Celtic to play on nights like this. He’s dealing with that remarkably well. “I think they need a few players in that can help”.
The meekness of last season’s Celtic was glimpsed in the Nou Camp but it was not the same Celtic we saw in the Etihad, or the same side in Glasgow against Pep Guardiola’s side.
The intensity dropped in the second half, perhaps not surprisingly with neither side having much to play for.
There were some scuffles between opposition supporters in the closing stages, but on the whole this was a match played in good spirits by two sides intent on scoring.
“They have a lot of quality and I’m pretty sure they are going to come back to what they deserve”.
“The game was good for the spectators, both teams tried to attack”.
“I am a coach to get results, otherwise I would not be here”, Guardiola said. “He loves young players, he talks to you every day and he just wants the best for me”.
