11 things to know about the 2017 Grammys
Beyonce, now the most Grammy-nominated artist in history, leads all artists with nine nominations in multiple fields, including pop (Hold Up), rock (Don’t Hurt Yourself), rap (Freedom) and film (her sumptuous visual album Lemonade).
Also in for Album of the Year nominations include Justin Bieber’s Purpose; Drake’s Views; and Sturgill Simpson’s A Sailor’s Guide to Earth. Adele, the British pop sensation, also secured nominations in all the three major categories.
The 59 Grammy Awards aims to recognize the best contributions in the music industry that were released from the first of October 2015 to the end of September 2016. Their hot duet in Rihanna’s “Work” garnered two nominations and the other is for Drake song “Views” which featured Rihanna.
Rihanna has moved to quash claims that she is mad at Beyonce for getting nominated for Song and Album Of The Year at the Grammys.
Sia is also nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Cheap Thrills” and Grande is up for Best Pop Solo Performance for “Dangerous Woman”. The Grammy Awards will air live on Sunday, Feb. 12, and are hosted by James Corden.
And this year, the eligibility period prevented Lady Gaga’s new album “Joanne” from being nominated.
A person familiar with the Grammy nomination process told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Beyonce submitted “Daddy Lessons” – from her album “Lemonade” – to the country category.
A change in Grammy eligibility rules announced in June made his streaming-only album a contender for this year’s awards.
Besides Album of the Year, Beyonce and Adele go head-to-head for Record of the Year, which recognizes individual tunes, and Song of the Year, which looks at songwriting. The record does make an appearance in the best alternative album category as does Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool. I don’t necessarily think the best music always gets represented and awarded at any award show.
Chance the Rapper earned three nominations for best rap song: His hit, “No Problem”, is nominated, and he has writing credit on the Kanye West songs “Famous” and “Ultralight Beam”. The intrigue comes from Variety’s note that Beyonce has only prevailed once in one of the “big four” categories (and that was back in 2009), while Adele has triumphed in all of them already.
One of the things I love about seeing the complete Grammys nominee list is it presents me with the opportunity to hear new music that I might have missed during the year.
