Three-Year-Old Girl Shot By Child Playing With a Gun
The shooting happened around 8:20 p.m.in an apartment in the 600 block of 46th Place in the southeast.
Cox was in her mother’s apartment with her 7 year-old brother and one of their friends when the brother somehow got hold of a gun and accidentally shot the girl, The Washington Times reports.
Dalis was found unresponsive with gunshot wounds inside the building.
Police say a 3-year-old girl has been fatally shot in southeast Washington and preliminary information shows that another child may have been playing with a gun when it discharged, striking the girl.
Police have not said whether the gun belonged to someone in the apartment or if it was found elsewhere by the other child.
“We believe it was a young child that got their hands on a gun, so we do believe it was an accident”.
The child was rushed to Prince George’s Hospital Center in critical condition by D.C. police who were already on the scene, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said at a news briefing Thursday afternoon.
She was taken to hospital but later died from her injuries.
“I said, ‘Baby, I have to go to work. The next thing I know, my niece ran down to my sister and she was shot”, the woman said.
“People need to make sure they are with their kids at all times”.
