John Kasich to Electoral College: Don’t cast your vote for me
With millions of people pinning their hopes of preventing Donald Trump’s presidency on these electors, there will undoubtedly be crowds gathered around the electoral voting locations.
Nemanich said their goal is not to get Hillary Clinton into the White House but rather a Republican alternative and to keep Donald Trump out. So Secretary Clinton should be declared the victor and President-elect, right? Consequently, the popular vote is irrelevant to establishing who wins. How is that possible?
His argument is that since California is both the largest state and leans very strongly towards one party, it’s right and proper that it is partially disenfranchised by the Electoral College. Each individual vote in Wyoming counts for almost four times as much in the Electoral College as each individual vote in Texas. The Hamilton Group is arguing that the circumstances of this election consitute an “emergency” and dictate the use of a failsafe, in this case, the going against the public vote and selecting a different president.
The election of the next president is not yet a done deal.
That decision could be made more hard after the OH governor on Tuesday tweeted he wanted electors like Suprun to vote for Trump to help unify the country. 7 column “Fate now with Electoral College”, aptly noted: “The stakes are too high, and the evidence of Trump’s presidential aptitude deficit too severe” to ignore.
The Electoral College has an interesting foundation, devised by our Founding Fathers to balance the influence of big and small states, but it certainly has its flaws.
In 2004, a Democratic elector from Minnesota voted for John Edwards instead of John Kerry for president, although that appeared to be a mistake. There are 538 electors.
But neither Painter nor Tribe has made direct contact with any electors, and Tribe said he has heard from “less than a dozen” concerned electors from Michigan, Texas and elsewhere, a number he concedes is not enough to make a difference.
A Certificate of Ascertainment is prepared by each governor following the election. Baca is the second presidential elector the firm is representing and said he will vote for Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Electors across all states will cast their votes for the next POTUS Monday, December 19. Sisneros quit his position in the Electoral College to avoid casting his ballot.
The Constitution does not specifically require electors to cast their votes according to the popular vote in their states, but the laws of 29 states and the District of Columbia bind electors to do so.
For his part, Fairbrother said he voted for another candidate in the primary election whom he declined to identify, but switched his support to Trump in the general election.
On Jan. 6, a joint session of Congress is convened and the electoral votes are counted.
“We are working with a number of electors on this issue, not just Chris”, Smith said in an email statement.
It is indeed a convoluted and arcane process, but the fact is, it does ensure that the votes of all of the states are needed in order to elect a President.
