GATLINBURG, Tennessee (AP) – The wildfire that popped up on a steep, rugged peak in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was just one of a dozen that fire crews had been fighting over the last month because of the drought.
Gatlinburg Fire Department Chief Greg Miller said at a press conference Thursday the fire had moved very quickly, overwhelming the resources of his department and national park fire authorities, who did not know that winds would gust as violently as they did. “It is just knocked down”.

Authorities want to talk with anyone who hiked in the Chimney Tops area or who knows anyone who hiked the trail on November 23. Strong winds that began Sunday helped the fire spread into the Gatlinburg area the next day.
In response to reporters’ questions Friday, John Matthews with the Sevier County Emergency Management Agency said a text alert telling people to evacuate went out around 9 p.m. Monday to anyone with a mobile device connected to a cell tower in the city.
More than 14,000 people have been evacuated from Gatlinburg and the neighbouring resort town of Pigeon Forge.
In Gatlinburg, the centre of the devastation, officials hope to open the city’s main roads to the public by Wednesday.
