Luck sharp as Colts crush Jets
The Jets have not really used a tight end this season and have made this position irrelevant in their offensive gameplan.
The New York Jets (3-9) hosted the Indianapolis Colts (6-6) on Monday Night Football this week looking to salvage what’s left of their season.
The switch of quarterbacks was needed, if not overdue. Its performance Monday night can’t be of any help to coach Todd Bowles, who led the Jets to a 10-6 mark a year ago in his first season in charge.
“We got effort, we just didn’t play with much intelligence last night”, Bowles said. “We just started him a half early”. That’s the slot we had penciled in for him.
While the Jets would fall to the Patriots by a score of 22-17, they certainly made it clear to the Colts that their record is not indicative of how well they can play. “There’s no better time to get hot than now”.
Second-year signal caller Bryce Petty took over for Ryan Fitzpatrick to begin the third quarter and went 11 of 25 for 135 yards, one touchdown – a 41-yard strike to Robby Anderson – and two interceptions.
Brandon Marshall, Matt Forte and Quincy Enunwa, who is filling in nicely for the injured Eric Decker. will lead the attack for the Jets. The Colts are giving up 27.4 points and 406.7 yards per game. They get quarterback Andrew Luck back tonight, after he missed last week due to a concussion.
Speaking via conference call on Tuesday, Bowles confirmed that Fitzpatrick will be his No. 2 quarterback ahead of second-round draft pick Christian Hackenberg.
“When you look at all our guys, a lot of the things that’s kind of happened when you make plays here or there, they’re getting attention”, defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers said. “It’s one of those seasons when each man has to look himself in the eye and ask himself, ‘What type of player do you want to be? You have to take it day by day, hour by hour and stay in your routine and prepare and be a professional to be successful in December”.
Petty said having been named the starter was big for him in the coming weeks. He’ll get a fair chance to show his potential. Over the last six games, NY ranks third in the National Football League in opponents’ passer rating (73.8 percent) after placing 31st during the first six games with 114.7 percent. “Everything is big these next four games”.
Only the Jets would make a simple hand-off into nationally televised fumble! On the flip side, they are allowing the 11th-most passing yards per game and a 64.1 percent completion percentage to opposing quarterbacks.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for me, but I didn’t want it to be this way”, Petty said after the game.
Better late than never. “This is where this starts”.
