Union official says he won’t be silenced about Trump and Carrier situation
“I better watch out for myself, and they know what kind of auto I drive, that I better watch out for my kids”.
Last night, Donald trump on his twitter handle, addressed the union chief, Chuck Jones with disparaging tweets. He has celebrated the deal, which came with $7 million in tax breaks, while reiterating his campaign pledge to impose 35 percent tariffs on companies that move jobs out of the country.
Carrier’s parent company, United Technologies, admitted in an interview to CNBC that they are investing $16 million in automation in order to compete with Mexico.
Trump fired off a tweet Wednesday that said Jones “has done a awful job representing workers”.
“This guy makes pennies for what he does”, Brett Voorhies, the president of the Indiana State AFL-CIO, said of Jones.
“I didn’t attack him”, Jones said.
Those not familiar with the matter should be made aware, that Trump proclaimed during the elections, that he would save 11,000 jobs in total.
Trump was defending a deal that he and Vice President-elect Mike Pence – governor of IN – celebrated during a December 1 visit to Carrier’s Indianapolis factory. “I nearly threw up in my mouth”.
“But he got up there”, Jones said Tuesday, “and, for whatever reason, lied his a** off”.
Vice President-elect Mike Pence, who is also the governor of IN, gave a very different description of the union back IN March.
Don’t forget-Jones is working to lift his members’ spirits because more than a thousand of them will be out of work while the president-elect runs around claiming to have saved their jobs.
It sounded like great news when Carrier said last week that it would invest millions in the in plant it made a decision to keep in the U.S. “Now they’re keeping – actually the number’s over 1,100 people”, he said, “which is so great”. “What nobody is mentioning is that 550 people are losing their jobs”, Jones argued.
“They did not mention anything about 550 jobs here in IN going to Mexico”.
Jones noted that 350 research and development Carrier jobs were not in danger of leaving. And he said he’s not particularly concerned with threats he’s received since his dispute with Trump.
In light of the criticism, Trump took to Twitter.
Despite Trump’s vow, Carrier is still outsourcing nearly 600 jobs across the southern border next year. I see a #ToldYouSo hash tag about Trump coming REAL soon!
She still backs her union president. “Trump let people believe that they were going to have a livelihood in that facility”, Jones wrote.
Trump’s blame of the union may suggest he won’t exactly be a best friend to organized labor while in office.
