Light snow tonight with Arctic cold for the end of the week
Wednesday through Friday will be cold with high temperatures in the teens and overnight lows in the single digits.
While the evening commute will be fine, snow showers will move in later, after 8 p.m.
A few showers can’t be ruled out on Saturday morning as warm and moist air returns to Alabama. Another 3 or so inches will be possible Thursday.
Then the “fun” begins! The high temperature will be about 15 above, but wind chill values could feel as cold as -15. While our computer models disagree about the temperatures Sunday night into Monday, nearly all of them agree that the atmosphere will be cold enough to support snow on Sunday night. Thursday will be windy and very cold with highs in the low 20s and wind chills in the single digits! The wind will create dangerously cold wind chills, and blow snow around which could reduce visibility.
As the storm intensifies east of Cape Cod tomorrow morning any precipitation should end early, with a breezy mix of clouds and sunshine, high temperature in the 30s. Temperatures will hold steady, perhaps even rise, as strong southerly flow of mild air develops across the state.
There is a chance for a messy mix Saturday.
Flurries and some snow will start to overspread the area from southwest to northeast late Friday night. We will keep you updated. While the cold will no longer be as biting, these temperatures are still 20 degrees below normal. We go back to cold and dry for early next week. Until then, bundle up!
Tonight: Snow showers tapering off. Low temperature in the 30s.
Thursday: A chance of snow showers after 1 p.m.
Low clouds will limit visibility, especially south of I-20 this evening.
Friday: Sunny, high only in the teens.
Temperatures are set to drop dramatically in the days ahead, with wind chill values dipping to well-below zero.
As cold as it’s going to be, this cold snap won’t come close to the record-setting cold snap of December 1989. The rain may be heavy at times Saturday.
